I thought GAD would snatch this one up, but since he did not, I acquired it. I suspect it will eventually end up with him, at least to be reviewed.

The guitar appears to be all original. Had the original pickup and strap buttons restored.

I have not even played it yet, but my impressions will be mostly irrelevant, since I just don’t play much electric

But it is beautiful, in near-mint condition, and feels very substantial (7.4 lbs)

Congrats! That certainly puts the luxe in Deluxe. Makes my plain jane X-79 seem boring. Have fun!

Ooh I don't think I'd noticed that cool backplate before!

That is absolutely wild! Gorgeous wood, burst, fretboard inlays and detailing all around. Congrats on that score!

I do question why someone would buy a guitar they don’t intend to play, but then again I go up to my attic and question some of the things I’ve bought before. However, I’m glad you grabbed it to at least keep it in LTG. Quite the conversation piece.

I play most of the guitars I own, and wholeheartedly subscribe to the mantra that Guild guitars are “Made to be Played.“

For me, however, this guitar is an exception due to the fact that these guitars inevitably get damaged when played, plus I don’t play in the style that these guitars were intended to service.

Surprisingly, no one expressed an interest in it when it was offered up on LTG, and I thought it would be a shame for it to be sold to someone who (1) does not appreciate it for what it is, (2) will irrevocably mod it, or (3) will damage it.

So I acquired it, even though I have no use for it, other than to enjoy it aesthetically.

Perhaps I am only its temporary guardian. I would love to see GAD take it off my hands so he can fully evaluate and report on it, but that is obviously up to him.

Tom Crandall actually knows JJ French (of Twisted Sister) pretty well, so he took a photo of the guitar and sent it to him to get his thoughts. He played Skyhawks and was a Guild endorser back in the day.

To be continued…

I must admit to having a red Guild Detonator that I rarely touch due to its pristine condition. The fellow I bought it from said he was selling it because he was afraid of putting the first scratch on it. He had a blue one he played.

When I first opened the case and held it, I completely understood what he was feeling. It seems silly not to play it, but I have others I play and would not want to be the first to put a mark on it either. I do pull it out occasionally and play it a bit and back in the case it goes.

That is a rare find you have there. I have never seen another X-79 like it.

I just noticed the "LL" serial number on it which designates it as a prototype. You may have a one-of-a-kind there.

Sorry if I came across the wrong way Andrew. I didn’t intend to do that. I am very glad you were in a position a save it from all of those other possibilities. We have seen a few rare beauties lost to the winds. Hopefully it will remain in the LTG family for a long time and continue to be appreciated and unmolested. I could just put that on a wall and admire at it as a piece of modern art, which it is!

Oh WOW. She’s absolutely stunning. Same finish as my new to me X82. The binding looks incredible on the x79s headstock. You mentioned the possibility of only being its temporary guardian. Would you still consider letting her go?

Perhaps in the future, but for now I enjoy looking at it too much to part with it, and I would love GAD to fully evaluate it for posterity before releasing it back into the wild.

I completely understand. It’s a breathtaking x79. Please do keep me in mind in the future if you do decide to let her go I’ll alway be interested. It would be amazing to have the pair of them together.
