And here I was expecting a simple mishap involving a sawzall & vulnerable body parts, beecee.

You're very fortunate that your breathing wasn't impacted by that allergic reaction to the stings!

In that case your wife might have been writing to tell us the details about your demise . . . after she took out the hornets nest, of course.

If you have an anaphylactic shock response, (airway closing) and you survive, you must carry an Epi Pen to stab yourself with in case of attack.

I forgot to mention that your second response is usually much worse than your first, third even worse yet.

A fickle immune system is what does this, an immune system over response basically.

The moral here is that you're highly eligible to got to your doc and get an Epi pen. You should keep it handy, and more importantly DO NOT get strung again for as long as you can avoid it, a year would be best.

When I used to do a lot of camping and hiking benedryl was always in the pocket med kit. Still is to this day if I go anywhere remote. As a scoutmaster we always also had liquid form, and of course carried all the prescription meds for any one who had allergies. I remember at one camporee where the liquid benedryl likely saved one kid’s life until the EMTs and ambulance arrived.

Yeah Baby, Benadryl. You bet we keep it around and the neighbors know and come here if somebody needs it. I also have 4 Epi pens, but all old now.

When I got mine, they were $90 for a 2pk. Then I hear things changed...

The Benadryl thingies you put in your tongue, harder to find, you chew one of the up for a sec and then put it on a sting, it can almost negate a sting.

The worst stings form me are hand or even worse finger. The pain is debilitating for a few minutes, and then the swelling. It's hard to do anything with a hand that look s like a grapefruit.

I was going to post some short story about not dropping a wasps nest between you and the only path out of the small fenced in area, and then I read the other stories. Naw. I'll stay out of this one. I got nothin'.

It's crazy but one tiny wasp can mess up your whole day. Dunno if we're having some weird eco collapse, but there aren't very many right now. However, even one can mess you up, always be vigilant. And they are clever.

I walk into the greenhouse to pick tomatoes, going fine until I get to a tomato with one on it, eating from a crack. You think you could just shoo it away. It rears up menacingly as you get near and you'd be foolish to think it can't fly and sting you even multiple times in a split second.

I actually had to abort mission, go get sprayer, come back, he was still there, ready to fight. A little peppermint soap fog and back to work.

Does Peppermint soap work on ants ? My wife almost has to use an Epi pin when they bite her. Only in the last 10 years or less. Before that, she and they were fine.

Peppermint seems to deter most things. Yesterday got real hot here. I thought I was going to check out the fluids in the snow plow truck, but there was an orange sized next in the same corner of the hood as the brake master cylinder, go figure. They were very nice and didn't sting me as they roared out past my face.

So, I moved on, no truck work, but they were flying out of a hole up high by the garage door, they were all over the place and at this point, they're not going to forage as much as moving in for winter. So I decided, nah, I really don't want you to move in, so I mixed up some Dr.Bronners Peppermint soap with a few drops of Peppermint essential oil, and I shot it up into the hole they were flying in and out of, soaked the wood real well and the whole rest of the day, not one in sight. Meaning they went somewhere else, cannot handle the smell of peppermint, meaning they won't come out as much in the spring.

Ants, which we get in our house sometimes, the really tiny ones that invade your kitchen, or the big ones that make antpiles out in the yard are dealt with differently.

You need Borax and honey or other liquid sweetener. You mix a little sweetener with Borax powder into tiny little chunks, and let them have it. Don't crush them in your house if you can resist the temptation, I've heard hat sends out a signal for them to swarm.

Eventually these hard working little buggers with take the Borax back to the queen that's laying eggs and the problem will go away, every time this has worked. Got all ants to move on this way.

Not sure what to do about the reaction to ant sting, it's an immune thing. Avoid stings. Reactions typically just get worse and worse.

Peppermint Dr. Bronners solution will of course kill them by drowning, any soap will by breaking the surface tension of the water and getting into their lungs, but Peppermint is neurotoxic to bugs.

You can also deter or detour bugs from your place by spraying around your house, sheds, etc.

My kid lives in a brick house in town that's just lousy with spiders, Hobo spiders can have a real bad bite and with the 3yr old grandbaby she gets the place sprayed and it worked. But then it stops working. I'm talking her into buying the stuff and a sprayer herself. Essentria 3, you can get it all over the place, as well as decent sprayers.

This stuff won't hurt people, pets, most importantly little kids.

+1 for the Essentria IC3: My lawn care company uses it for their mosquito control program. They spray our yard once a month and it is highly effective in controlling the little bast**ds (aka the "New Jersey State Bird"). And it smells good, too: 10% Rosemary Oil, 5% Geraniol, 2% Peppermint Oil.
