I've been searching for the Guild of my dreams for years. It would be great if anyone had any info on this guitar. Specifically, anyone out there have this model from 1956? How is yours looking? Any tips on keeping her in great shape?

Hello jchadwick,

Welcome! While your Guild X-175 has a '56 serial number, it is a bit older than that, or at least the 'superstructure' is older than the serial number would suggest. It was part of a 'group' of instruments that was already built around 1954, but did not get finished (as in completed) at that time. Not sure how familiar you are with the various model specs, but your guitar should still have the older Epiphone-style neck heel, which would be the most obvious give-away for an 'older' guitar. Other features that your guitar may have, and that would be different from a 'regular X-175 from the year 1956, are the headstock overlay, the absence of a serial number on the back of the headstock, the rounded fingerboard block inlays and no binding along the fingerboard. The label will most likely still have the New York 7 postal code, but that would be normal for a guitar from 1956.

Hope you will enjoy knowing that your guitar is just a little different from the 'average' X-175 from 1956 and a typical example of how the Guild factory operated during that particular period.

Sincerely,

Hans Moust
