Anyone here buy a 1958 Guild X-550 from Willies American Guitar in St.Paul MN? I was told it went to someone in Canada. The guitar had a neck reset, frets and needed new binding but it was one sweet archtop. I really hope it went to a good home.

I originally saw the guitar on consignment at Eclipse Music and tried to buy it then but it needed a neck reset, all new frets and all new binding. I made the owner an offer and never heard back from her. I later found out it was repaired at Willies and went to someone in Canada. It was a beautiful blond X-550 but needed a lot of work, Willies did everything but rebind it. As I said I hope it went to a good home. It was the guitar that got me into archtops. I ended up buying a Gibson L-4CES and I couldn't be happier with it. With a solid spruce top and solid mahogany back and sides it has a deeper, darker sound than a L-5 or Super 400 with the maple back and sides but the same playabilty. I didn't get that much time to play the Guild to get a good feel for the sound. I have also bought a Gibson ES225T and a Guild X-170 and all have there own unique sound and playability.
Thanks John

John - Do you know how much Willie's had that x550 listed for?

No I don't know what they sold it for but I know they did $1500.00-2000.00 in work to it and it still needed binding work. I had offered $1500.00-1800.00 before any repairs. I am sure there had to be some profit in there somewhere. I am really sorry I never took any photos of the guitar.
Thanks John

Thanks John. The $'s sound right.

If they accepted your high end offer ($1,800), invest another $2,000 in repairs and take care of the binding issues at $400 - $500, the price tag is about $4,300.

An X550 is high on my gas list.

I'd be interesting in getting a feel for the amount X500s can fetch. I'll be selling my 56 X500 soon and would like to offer it here first ( i'm in the UK). From what I can gather from these posts, can you be talking $4000+? seems a lot....

I would say that would not be unreasonable for a 1950's X500 or X550 if it is in really good condition. I looked at a lot of older archtop guitars before I bought my L-4CES and almost all I found needed some kind of work and that is usually expensive. I had planed to put appro. $2000.00 into the X550 over a couple years if I bought it at $1500.00 and I went up to $1800.00 just because I really lusted after it, you know how it is. That would be pushing the total price with repairs up to $3800.00 which I figured, if it's not worth that now some day it would be. Nice logic huh? It worked on the wife. Anyway, it wasn't meant to be and I ended up getting a new Gibson L-4CES for $3400.00, it doesn't need any work, it has a warranty and the Gibson name doesn't hurt when my wife has to sell it after I am gone to guitar heaven. It's not a Guild but I am very happy with it. So for a 1950's X500 that is in very good condition and needs no work, I don't think $4000.00 is out of line if you really want one. After all how many can there be out there like that?
Thanks John

Yes, I have used that logic too...
The x500 and L4 are both very nice guitars, in different ways. I have a '59 L4 that is wonderful, but there's just something about the old long scale, narrow waisted, franz pickup X500 that does it for me. Unfortunately, the long scale is slightly too big for me.

I agree with you , the shorter scale is just right for me. When I play my D-50 it's quite a reach for my short fingers sometimes.
Thanks John

Chris, the late '50's / early 60's X500's had Franz pickups and a ("Gibson") 24.75 scale. Of course, trying to find one for sale is a different story...

Thanks Jeff...but mine is a mixture of newer & older features, according to Hans, with a 57 serial number but a an NY label and long scale. The scale is actually 25 5/8th", and it has slightly rounded-off f/b inlays. It also has a Melita bridge, although there's no way of knowing if that's original. Unfortunately a previous owner applied sticking tape to the underside, which has lifted some of the nitro under the bridge. I don't mind the Melita - it looks somewhat honky, but the plastic saddles mellow out the tone, rather like the old ABR1 plastic saddles did. Useless for string damping, though.

It was bought from Mandolin Bros by a well-know UK jazz guitarist who recorded with it - I subsequently rescued it from fleabay.
The electrics are very robustly done - heavy wire everywhere, huge pots- and still work perfectly. For some odd reason though the Franzes don't have that zig-zag wire on top of the coil, which indicates some internal ''inspection'' in the past. The pickup magnets are very strong after 50+ years - as strong as any current P90 types, and the output voltage from them is the same as a new HB pickup. Makes you wonder about this ''magnet ageing'' thing......

Anyway I'm sitting here typing with the X500 hanging on the wall...I think it's glowing slightly.........
