Hey Everyone,

There's a guy in my area selling a one owner 1964 Emerald S-200. He is claiming that the emerald color is extremely rare and he is asking 6K.

I own a couple of Guilds a M-80 and a s-60D and love them but would like to know everyone's opinion on this guitar, is it really that rare and to a collector worth that much. No way can I afford a guitar of this value but just curious!

Thanks

Tommy

The emerald is probably 'rare' although rarity usually carries a premium for collectors and not necessarily players. It looks in good condition and there is something of value to getting 40+ year old instrument from the original purchaser.

If you are a collector then it might be worth $6K but that has more to do with the collector's desire to have it at any cost and nothing to do with how much another collector (or player) would pay. (Does that make any sense?).

I personally find it hard to contemplate a guitar purchase at $3K or more but a lot of that is that I have so many other things I would do with $3K.

My opinion is that the guitar in question is collectible although I have no idea how many collectors are out there who would need an emerald S-200 to fill a niche.

That might be a Grot guitar, but I doubt any players would want to spend that much. Definitely a collector piece, and as much as I'm a sucker for emerald/green finishes I don't feel any temptation. Also, rare doesn't equal valuable. The fact that it's a 40-year-old S-200 from the original owner with OHSC - and presumably in good condition - is where all the value comes from. I'd say it might go for a tad more than other S-200's, but the green doesn't make it a $6000 guitar in my book. FWIW - probably about $.02.

That's the first thing I thought of when I saw that guitar, that it looked like a Grot guitar. Then again, he already has a gorgeous sunburst '65 S-200, and I doubt the 6-large price tag would make him want to add it to the museum as a second S-200, regardless of how rare it is. Correct me, Grot, if I am mispeaking on your behalf.

As I was driving in to work this morning, I saw the electronic billboard showing what the Lottery and Powerball were up to, and my first thought was "I would buy that green S-200." Seriously! That's what I thought. Not, I would quit my job or pay off my bills or put my four kids through Harvard or like that. It was, "I would buy that green S-200." I know, I have a problem.

Pretty much dead on!

It's an honor to have the "Grot" collection held in such esteem!

If it's dead mint it might be worth the 6K to someone that just has to have it. It's not me though, I'm happy with my '65 which came with some "case candy"!

Here's a better look:

If I was interested and with the market as soft as it is, I'd offer him $3500 and go up from there.

I have only seen one of these before. It was posted at "Greg's Guitars". If I recall correctly the asking price was $6000 to $7000.
