Man it's a sweet-looking S-100. Persistence and qualified people make for a great result as we can see in your restored natural S-100. Congratulations!!!

Re: My 1971 S-100

Update - After playing the S-100 for a while I noticed something strange going on with the volume knobs. I found that when I
turned down the volume slightly it changed the sound somewhat instead of just decreasing the volume, like what happens when the phase switch is engaged, only that being a 1971 model it has no phase switch. So I ran this by Zelja and he suggested that it might be wired out of phase. So I popped over his place and he opened it up and surely enough that was the problem. He said I could leave it like that for more tonal variety or rewire it, and being a bassplayer by trade, 4 knobs are more than enough for me to deal with.So I decided to let him rewire it so that the volume knobs could act as volume knobs. Problem sorted.
Special Thanks are in order to Zelja for taking the time to help me out and for being a cool bloke. I`ll have some beers for you the
next time we meet up. Cheers mate. Rob

Just went through the thread again - magnificent restoration and props to Zelja and Rob for restoring a great Guild and getting it back in action in its former glory.

Re: My 1971 S-100

The guitar looks spectacular in person as well. Big props to Rob & his luthier for getting it done - mine was just a very small cameo at the end & it was a pleasure to help out.

Just to be clear the issue Rob had only occurred when both pickups were on. The pickups were wired out of phase & it was a simple case of changing the wiring at the tabs of the bridge pickup. For someone who doesn't mind playing with the knobs I reckon having the PUs wired out of phase offers lots of tonal possibilities if you have separate volume controls for the 2 pickups.

The great thing is that I met Rob through this forum & he allowed this stranger into his home to try out his M-80 at his place, as I was interested in a model in New Zealand which Coastie was willing to be an enabler for. After that we arranged a jam & when he left my place for the first time I told him "you have cost me money" as I knew I just had to get an S-100 after trying out his S-90. We've had a few jams since & I look forward to the day he brings his M-80 & I finally get my SFIV so we can crank them through my amps. My neighbours love it when Rob comes over. :D

Coastie is enabling models now?

Seriously though - well done. It is nice to see further before and after photos. It looks fantastic and I hope you are enjoying playing it.

I notice you didn't install the clear pickguard. Is the black one more period-correct, or do you just prefer the look of the black one?

Hans said that a black one would have been more period correct, but I`m yet to try the clear one.
I might put it on and see what I prefer. I`ll try to post pics of both for a comparison.

:D OK, I can see how it can read that way & I wish he would. Rachel Hunter will do fine.

How's the new job going Phil? Much indebted to you & your shipping methods - my SFIV should come through next. I finally got myself an S-100 as well thanks to Los Angeles - I'll start a thread when I get back home.

Re: My 1971 S-100

Rachel Hunter would be better than a 1/48 scale Spitfire by Airfix - that is the kind of model I've had the most to do with!

The new job is going well, thanks. I've always been a bit of a scientist/greenie so it is great to be in renewable energy - even at this small local business scale. It doesn't pay enough yet for me to be able to be replenish the Guild collection, but that will come in time. In the meantime, I'll have to live my Guild dreams vicariously through you and other LTGers. Looking forward to seeing/hearing about SF-IV!

BTW, I've lent my S-100 to a friend with many more guitar chops than me. He is recording an album and was blown away by the tone.

I somehow missed this thread the first time around. I just wanted to say that you have one gorgeous guitar and it is great to see it get a new lease on life.

The black one contrasts much more with the natural body therefore making it more noticeable. Plus it's period correct. However some would say that there's no need to hide that beautiful 'hog grain behind the PG and they will be right too. I'd go for a black one but it's of course a matter of personal preference.

Normally I think clear is good to let the finish show through (e.g., my sunburst '77 might have benefited from that), but in this case the black one is better, especially with the period-correct Guild logo.

Rockon.
