Back in 1974 I bought my then-new D-40 from a nice Mom & Pop music store in MA. The serial number is #107656.

My question is this:

There is no label inside the guitar. Should it have had one? I know I didn't remove the label (if there should have been one) and I can't believe any reputable dealer would have done so either. The guitar has never been out of my possession.

Factory oversight or...????

I'm sure not the expert, 6, but I would think there surely should have been a Westerly label in that soundhole...

It probably fell out... Seems to me one of the first questions I ever posted here was re: a D-40 missing a label that I was looking at on eBay. Hans offered that it wasn't uncommon for labels to come loose and fall out... as I recall, he suggested looking inside with a mirror... the label may still be inside somewhere. I didn't buy the D-40... but look where I ended up!

A couple of the labels in my '70s dreads are peeling at the edges (some day, I'll use a little gelatin to glue 'em back down, and maybe put in some ID labels).

Edit... somehow I missed the part where you said you bought it new, and it didn't have the label. Suppose it might have fallen out during shipping... or they just forgot to put one in?

or they just forgot to put one in?

I'm thinking that's what happened although it sure seems unlikely something like that would be missed at the factory.

Hans told me sometimes they didn't use enough glue, and the labels just fell off.

Actually, the labels are stickers so it's not a question of using enough glue. However, sometimes the surface on which the labels were attached was not cleaned enough or not entirely free of dust, which caused the labels to come loose.

Sincerely,

Thanks for all the wisdom above!

I'm guessing it probably DID have a sticker on it when I bought it and that over the years it fell out and I never noticed.

Stupid question, but couldn't it just be wandering around in the depths of the guitar somewhere ? Tried getting in there with a hoover ?

That was a man's look wasn't it ? I bet your wife would find it in there !! I find it seriously hard to believe that it could have fallen out, I mean have you ever dropped a pick inside your guitar and tried to get it out ?

Right after joining this forum I looked inside my ’79 D40 and found that the label was missing. I shook it quite a bit - nothing. Stuck an inspection mirror inside; still no label.

Shortly after that I brought her in for a neck reset and setup. When I came in to pick it up the luthier handed me the label. I have no idea where he found it.

I keep meaning to glue it back in, but always forget while I’m restringing. In the meantime the label is in my case.

For some reason I’m expecting that when I do remember, I won’t be able to find it.
