I have an op-portunity to buy a 1995 J55 for $2000. It is in excellent shape except that it has had a saddle pickup added with a volume and tone control. The controls were placed oin the top of the saide by the neck which means ythey had to drill holes in it. First of all is this a good price and do the controls de-value the guitar since they had to drill holes to put them in? Thanks

That sounds a wee bit high for a JF55 of that vintage; I sold my '96 JF65 for a little more than half that, though it did have some minor cosmetic issues. Hey, if it's really nice, maybe.

Personally, I think about $1500 is a fair price for a JF55 in "immaculate" condition. I think if the electronics did anything to the value, it ould decrease it, but that's just my personal opinion. I'm not real sure exactly what you're talking about on the drilled holes. But you know, sometimes a guitar just talks to you and if she really melts your butter, it doesn't matter what she costs, you're the only one that has to pay for it.

That price was high a year or so ago.
When I bought and sold my JF-55 $1500.00 was the ball park.
Now with the higher prices that the new Guilds are going for, $2000.00 may be getting close to the current value of a used JF-55 in excellent condition.
I would split the difference, if it were me though. [$1750.00]

That does sound high. But I have seen J55's on Ebay going rather high. I had a J55 in 2003 that I purchased for about $1450. Has their value increased that much since then?

$2000 seems a bit on the high side for a JF55, especially one that's been modified, but I imagine it depends on the condition, and if the guitar is the one that you're going to keep for the next 20 years.

Thanks guys. I think I'll stick with my GAD JF-30.

Don't have anything bad to say about the GADs, but if you are in the market for an American Guild jumbo, just let us know and we will hunt down a good one at a fair price. Checking here is the best place to start for a used Guild.
