My DV-52 has some SERIOUS checking. I'm convinced it was UPS' fault for leaving it in a cold truck and then having the driver superheat the place to keep warm. Killed me at first, but i'm used to it now. They were probably there when you got the guitar and you can only see them when the light is right. Mine can almost be rubbed out! When i heat the guitar surface by rubbing it a little, the guitar expands and they vanish! As someone (not the previous owner. . .the owner BEFORE him) glued a poorly cut pickguard on that guitar at one point, i've always thought about getting the top refinished.
The only other guitar I have that's "checked" is my '77 D-25ch. . .and it's only a tad. My '76 D-35 and '72 D-25 are check free. Just goes to show that, if you're careful, they can be avoided.
My DV-52 is one of my favorite sounding acoustics though! I scored mine for $750, I think, from a fellow forum member (Scratch I think!) a couple years ago and couldn't be happier!
