I don't know how much more acclimation this guitar should need. The temps have been in the high 80's low 90's all week. Granted the guitar was in the case where I always keep it, but it didn't feel cold to the touch. Anyway I'll just keep her unplugged as she's loud enough without being amplified.

Speaking of amplification. Does anyone know how to ID the Fishman pickup installed on my DV52, without removing it from the guitar? It has what looks to be an on/off switch, plus 2 thumbwheel switches for volume and balance. Thanks......slow944s.

For all those in the DFW area, I saw another Guild in a Plano, TX. pawnshop. If I remember correctly it was a Corona(sp) Guild and was stained red I think. Only wanted $350 for it but I didn't get a chance to play it as I got paged with another Chase Bank service call. May try and swing by and see if it's still there......Slow944s

Welcome and congrats on the DV-52.

The cracks you see are in the lacquer finish. Very common in older guitars. Sometimes they are called cold checks because subjecting the guitar to cold temperatures can cause the lacquer to crack like that. Lacquer can continue to shrink for years after it is applied. Subjecting it to cold can cause it to shrink so quickly that it cracks.

The cracks can also be caused by taking a cold guitar into warm surroundings. As the wood warms and expands, the lacquer cracks.

Definitely not caused by playing through the amp. Nothing to worry about.
They are just a cosmetic issue.

My D35 has them - so do old oil paintings which also are laquered :D

My DV-52 has some SERIOUS checking. I'm convinced it was UPS' fault for leaving it in a cold truck and then having the driver superheat the place to keep warm. Killed me at first, but i'm used to it now. They were probably there when you got the guitar and you can only see them when the light is right. Mine can almost be rubbed out! When i heat the guitar surface by rubbing it a little, the guitar expands and they vanish! As someone (not the previous owner. . .the owner BEFORE him) glued a poorly cut pickguard on that guitar at one point, i've always thought about getting the top refinished.

The only other guitar I have that's "checked" is my '77 D-25ch. . .and it's only a tad. My '76 D-35 and '72 D-25 are check free. Just goes to show that, if you're careful, they can be avoided.

My DV-52 is one of my favorite sounding acoustics though! I scored mine for $750, I think, from a fellow forum member (Scratch I think!) a couple years ago and couldn't be happier!

I wouldn't. If you like the sound, don't mess with the top....There's no telling what it'll sound like afterwards...

That makes two of us (for both the favorite acoustic and the purchase price)...
