So I was sealing a guitar top today with shellac, all the while appreciating poop from a bug, or shell from the Lac bug specifically.
I use shellac to seal bare wood, and to spray over guitars I refinish that has an original catalyzed poly finish. As they say, shellac bonds to everything, and everything bonds to shellac! lacquer however, does not bond to foreign finishes well, except for shellac!. The glory of bug poop! It’s sands easy and fills in well. It’s my friend. I can buy flakes that are naturally tinted amber, or deep red. Put them in a jar with denatured alcohol over night and WA LA! Bug poop cocktail up! It makes a beautiful final finish if so choose, however don’t spill your rum and coke, Seagrams, or Jack on it, or the party’s over. So it’s not a popular finish. Melts instantly with alcohol. Really, the whole process is awesome if you’ve watched the harvesting in India and Pakistan. After scraping the tree limbs of the hardened excretion, they melt over heated rocks, all ow it to cool, then break it into flakes and ship it…to me! It’s also FDA approved, YES we can eat it! Yay Me! thats what makes the apples at the grocery store look so shiny! Why it even goes in womens make up, even lipstick! So the next time you use shellac, or kiss your wife, or put on lipstick, thank a bug!, ( I actually I wore makeup in the 80’s, on the west coast touring with metal bands, but that’s a picture for another thread, when y’all are ready…)
