It also depends at which time they were made. Hans book said: "3-piece laminated mahogany/maple/mahogany neck but many 1-piece mahogany necks are known". I guess that was valid at least for the time the book covered (till 1977) and we have seen excellent 3-piece maple necks already. GAD has a fine one with tiger stripes on the neck from 1994 for instance.

:D

I've seen some from the mid to late 70ies and have owned one from 1990 that was great. I love the maple neck starfires, especially with an ebony fretboard. in the early nineties they made a "kind-of-limited-run" with maple necks, ebony fretboard and gold harware, if I got hans right.

so occasionally was definately right, and you probably could have ordered it optionally.

Yeah, I'd say "occasionally" is right.

I prefer the 'hog neck myself. The maple neck on my '94 with the ebony board is almost too bright. That's not right... it's different. Maybe chimer is a better word. The 'hog necked blond is smoother sounding to my ears. Both of my X170s has maple necks, but I think they worked better on those guitars with their deeper, hollow bodies.

Here's my '00:

Here's my '94 (Maple):

My '73 was 'hog:

My '76 was all 'hog, all the time:

My '97 SFIII was also all 'hog:

Thanks for all the great information. I have been looking for a Starfire IV, V or VI for quite a while. I really like my X-170 with the maple neck and there is a 1990's Starfire IV available locally and it has a mahogany neck[ I am awaiting a serial number]. It's a blond and he is asking $1500.00 and i offered him $1200.00. I will have to go look and play it but I don't trust my self. If I look at it I will no doubt bring it home with me. I really wanted a maple necked Starfire so I guess I may have to have two Starfires! O darn!
Thanks John

Careful! That's how it starts. :)

I always wanted a maple necked Starfire too, because that's what my friend had back in the 70s/80s. I was actually disappointed when I got my Maple/hog Starfire, and now it's my favorite. There's something sexy about the tone that I don't get with my maple necked Starfires. It's subtle, but it's there. So now I have two. :)
