Are we weird

Help me with this fellas. I joined this group about two weeks ago. I was surfing for info on a sweet DV62. I just got lucky, I guess.

What I found was a couple hundred Guild Guitar zealots, complete with a Guru, all hooked up, actively sharing an incredible wealth of Guild info.

You guys, (me included), it seems, have in your possession a substantial percentage of Guild's total production. Everyone seems to average 3 or 4 Guild guitars. Nothing particularly weird, but significant.

Next I discover not a single Guild Guitar advertised for sale nationwide escapes the scrutiny of this group. So far it seems like at least 3 or 4 new Guilds are purchased weekly. No reasonable deal on vintage Guild wood is left undone. Weird? Not necessarily. But, contrastingly, I haven't seen very much offered for sale by my new Guild brothers.

Now I discover this group has a committe actively policeing the marketplace, insuring accuracy of Guild guitars offered for sale. Certain Ebay sellers refer to this committee as; "the Guild Guys, a social studies project?? Is this so? Do Martin & Gibson have similar programs?

Weird? If the shoe fits. It's a good thing.

Steve,

Yeah, I was really disappointed in Blair. And now it comes out that he has George Michaels over to check out his instrument.

Jeff,

This site is good also for asking about repairs.
Please tell me about your F20. A lot have been for sale lately, and I'm thinking of getting one.

Weird? Who? Where? When? Why knot?

OK - I just picked up this strain on my radio and couldn't fathom the depth of the wave. I mean you lads may be weird...but I? The soul of normality (or has Truman said, "normalcy").

OK, my wife just read over my shoulder and laughing said...."You? Normal? Not Mr. Guild, Volvo & Earthshoes!" OK, so perhaps birds of a feather do flock together. Having the secret of happiness may make some people smug.

As for me....the center of the universe was....Westerly - however you spell it. And people that sell Guilds and can't get the facts straight, well, perhaps they should just end the auction, give one of us the Guild inquestion - call it a donation to a benevolent social project - and go home. Me, I'm laughing at their expense.

Cheers, all! dbs

Jeff,

I just noticed your detailed earlier post about your F 20. I guess yoor favorite features would be the slim graceful neck, the spectacular top, the curvy shape, the figuration, and what Guild does for your wood. :D

Are we weird

I have never heard "Volvo" used as an adjective before. Sometimes the play here gets a little rough.

Darryl,

I'm not sure what you want to know about my F20 & I wouldn't presume to be an expert.

I can tell you why I like mine.

#1. I was specificially looking for a small body. I am an amateur player & wanted a small comfortable guitar. I had a D28 & sold it because it was too big & uncomfortable. I rarely played it. I assume the size of the F20 is approx the same as a Martin Single "O", close enough, the F20 is a little guitar.

#2. My F20 is uncommonly loud, couldn't say all of them are but this one makes some noise. I mostly fingerpick so when I had the neck reset I had the strings set pretty low but I can play it pretty hard is still get clean sound.

#3. The guitar is live, the entire thing vibrates when played, you can feel it moving thru your shirt and in your left hand on the neck. It has a bright clear sound, with strong bass, actually, considering the size, it has remarkable bass. It has several sweet spots, interesting harmonics, likes bluesy stuff and ballads, plays nice melodies.

#4. It has a small neck (narrow). I have clumsy short stubby fingers & at first the narrow fretboard was difficult, I was forced to play more precisely, likely a good thing, and now prefer the smaller neck. It's a fast neck.

The guitar probably sold for under a 100.00 new & was never intended to be a timeless heirloom, and mine needed some work, but I'm guessing you have to get into a Rosewood Martin of the same size & vintage to get a better small body. Taylor's "Baby Taylor" sounds like it's made from a solid wet log compared to this F20. I played a 000 Mahogany Martin, 60"s vintage in the local shop today, it was a nice old guitar but it had noticeably less sparkle and volume. The Gibson LG series are a good deal larger & nice ones (untill recently) more expensive, but the few I have played are definitely no louder than the F20, I usually put them back on the rack thinking they sound dull & unresponsive.

I thought I would never want another acoustic till I found a DV62 for reasonable. I should have never taken it off the rack, let alone play it.

One should not trifle with Rosewood.

Sigh !! True love lost to new romance.

I would be interested in discussing repairs, particularly Guild neck resets.

Yes Darryl,

My Guild wood is vibrant and sustains magnificently.

Sheesh, it's rough in here.

Rough wood?

Jeff -- Some terminology might help you here to smooth things out.

1) Wood selection - "whatever you would like it to be"

2) To be Volvoed - driven or 'to be driven home'...as in an idea....

3) Guilded or Guilding - as in "Guilding the Lily" - usually refers to trading in a substandard high-end guitar for any Guild. OR, "Damn, but she Guilded me, Watson!" Which refers to a gift of a lovely Guild; or that someone beat you playing your best tune on another brand-name guitar by playing their worst tune on any Guild.

4) Small-bodied - that means a member of the opposite sex with an afinity for standing quietly in the corner holding your Guild for you.

5) Fast neck - A quick, but passionate kiss from your significant other just before you're out the door with your Guild.

6) Articulated bridge saddle - Well-spoken and well-ridden.

7) Arched back - Well, I can't articulate what good mahogany can do for your most passionate moments.

8) Porch guitar - When your significant other is a Guild player and you're not and they only allow you to play outside on the porch (espcially on cold nights).

9) Woodshedding - What to build with most other brand guitars.

and
10) Dreadnaught - What you do when buying a Guild....you dread not.....

Hahahahah! Thus endeth the lesson, as Mr. Connery once said. Cheers! dbs (I know, don't give up my day gig...)

Remarkable bit of insight Smith. Your magniloquence and high flown style of bombastic speach articulate these definitions to the point they are intuitively obvious to even the most casual observer!

West

F20

Darryl,

Yes, Groupies can be troublesome at times. One more indication that size really doesn't matter.

All this talk of wood & other sensual aspects of Guilds leads me to believe Springtime may have come to the desert.

This discusion thread title is: "Are We Weird"

Spring has sprung and summer is about to simmer. Wish I could be in the northwest in the summer. I have an old friend in Seattle who is a big wheel judge. Ed Kandler. Ever hear of him?

What could be weirder than this discussion?

The kit

Jeff - You must've missed the check-in table marked "Guild Socio-Project - Essential Equipment". They would have given you Hans' book, the aforementioned "Safety Glassary" (a glossary to shield and protect from Ebaying at the moon), and a packet of BC Powders for when you just HAD to listen to someone misrepresent things. Astounding what we've been gathering here.....Dudley
