I though it would be OK to post our national symbol in Miscellaneous. Shot this one this morning close to the border, where it was mostly gray and rainy.

Bald Eagle, female

Yes, she appears to be giving me an eagle's version of the evil eye. 8)

How can you tell it's a female Joe?

I know....you're giving up trade secrets if you disclose that info.

Great photo Joe.

Great photo Joe.
Thanks Scott.
The females are larger than the males. If you see them side by side there's no doubt. Then, if you observe enough of them for long enough, you get used to relative size, which is a tough one to define.

Key word I guess is....practice.

Joe

*I'll see if I can dig out a photo of a pair side by side.

Thanks for the comments, all.

Just as a side note, this might be one of my all-time favorites.
I have ample opportunities to 'shoot' Bald Eagles and other birds throughout the year where I live, but the best shots are when I feel like I made a connection with the bird. This was the case with this eagle.

She had her back to me as I approached and when she saw me, she turned to face me. She was perched on a low snag on a sandspit and I couldn't just walk on by. She never did leave the snag so I felt that we made that connection, and then went on with our respective days.

Good stuff out there! :D

I like the new avatar.

What did you do to get the background uniformly white? PhotoShop (or equivalent) or something in the way you framed and took the shot? Thanks.

Thanks.

The background is a product of the uniformly gray/white, rainy sky from yesterday. I usually underexpose 1/3 of a stop but that background I attribute to the weather.
I don't own PhotoShop. 8)

Didn't think you owned PhotoShop or any other image editing software but the complete absence of anything in the background, at least on this monitor, was a puzzlement. Thanks.

They were, until zulu got cold talons and changed his back to a more guitar-related theme. So Joe reclaims the top perch all to himself.

I started to think it might be a little disrespectful to Joe's majestic photo of our national symbol.

My apologies in advance for bastardizing your great photo, Joe, but it was just screaming at me to do something with it. This is what I came up with...
