This is why whenever possible, one should play guitar, like guitar, buy guitar. Do this and what it's made of, what it's called, what year it was made, and what factory it came out of is all immaterial. Sure you should be as informed as possible, but adi does not mean you'll like the guitar.

Agreed, but to Al's point I wouldn't pay a premium price if it didn't have an adi top, which some Tacoma and New Hartford models had.....

2009 New Hartford Catalog (D40 Richie Havens* / D40 Bluegrass Jubilee / D50 Bluegrass Special)
*I listed the D40 Richie Havens above, not because it has an adi top, but because it was another D-40 variant from same factory and year.

And my memory of NH's labeling was based on a D40 that was a Bluegrass Jubilee but not so noted on label, we had to ID the build details. So another case of "Sometimes they did, sometimes they didn't":D

Bluegrass whatever or no, this much I can tell you guys- this old guitar SINGS!

I spent the afternoon on the couch watching golf and playing the heck out of this one. I got the new Elixirs played in, and they sound really good. This D-50 is just like my D-46; it can whisper, it can roar, it can flatpick, it can strum, and it can fingerpick too.

I hit the back with some D'Addario Restore and then some Virtuoso polish, and it just gleams now. Really nice rosewood.

I love the neck. It is the same size as the neck on my D-46, but the neck on that one is grainier and more porous. It is ash, with the finish worn down. This new one still has the gloss finish on it. I'm not usually a big fan of gloss finishes on the neck, but it is very thin and is starting to take the oil from my hand. It will be good, in time.

Now I have to decide if I want to put a K&K in it. I think my performing-in-public days are coming to an end, so I don't really need it; I'm leaning towards no pickup.

Anyway, thanks for all the information and opinions, I learned something from most and enjoyed every one!

It seems there were many variations of the D-50 going on at Hartford CT.

Actually only the D-50 Bluegrass Special (Adi top) and the D-50 Standard (Sitka top). There was a D-50CE Standard with cutaway as well.
Not counting the 20 pcs. GSR D-50 Cocobolo.

That's plenty for such a short run of the factory.
