This might be of interest to the Guild archtop community. I am sad to report that the great Carlo Greco has officially retired. I went to Alex Musical Instruments in New York City earlier this week to meet Carlo and thank him for making my guitar. Alas, the shop told me he retired a few months ago after he lost sight in one of his eyes. A guitar playing friend (and fellow Artist Award player) confirmed that not only did Carlo lose sight in an eye after an operation did not go well, but that Greco's wife recently passed away. Please keep him in your thoughts.

Double sad news, but I won't begrudge the man's right to retire, especially at his age, after so many years at the top of his profession.

It certainly is sad news! It is amazing though that he, one of the masters from the end of the golden age, was still active until recently.

Nick, I think this is of interest to any of the LTG folks who know some Guild history. I'm moving this to the misc section for wider viewing.

Wow, that's sad news indeed, Nick. I was planning on visiting Carlo again in the near future; I try to see him at least once a year. It's also bad that his wife passed away. Often when people are married as long as they have been, the surviving partner doesn't last long after one of the passes on. :(

Would it be appropriate for this board to encourage a effort to send cards to him? It might mean a lot if he received several cards from people he has never met. It might help him know the impact he has had on people's lives.

Sad news indeed. My right ear blew out this year but it's manageable. Losing one eye's vision when you're a luthier? Must be really hard to put the tools down for the last time professionally. But all pales to losing your wife, I can't imagine. My thoughts go out to Carlo Greco for sure.

I still have the F312NT that I was so excited about over four years ago that Carlo set up for me:

Played it on both of my albums, and it plans to be in the mix again for next year's recording as well. Hoboken-era Guilds, the gift that keeps giving. Thanks for sharing your gift for so long, Mr. Greco!

That was a great story Jahn, one to remember to say the least. I missed it originally so thanks for posting that again

Poser, I doubt any of us would object if someone like yourself or Sandy wants to start a thread and spearhead this for the members by getting addresses or whatever for people to contact Mr. Greco. It's a nice idea. I would recommend doing that in the LTG Members Only section.

I suspect that your letters, talking about the influence his craft had on us would brighten his days.
