Case complaint: this is just plain stupid

Those who followed my thread about getting my D-55 replaced know that I'm less happy with the new guitar's case than I was with the first one's. Lid doesn't fit right, lid tether strap is too short. And now I have another thing to complain about. Here is the base of the included Humicase humidifier without the sponge installed:

"Hey Joe, what kind of screws do I use to attach this thing inside the case lid?" "Plain steel screws are cheapest." "But won't the wet sponge rust them?" "Who cares? Just use whatever."

I mean really. This is minor and easily fixed, but still just plain stupid, and inexcusable. Did Guild find and hire the one lone person in America who doesn't know that water rusts steel?

I think the Humicases that Oxnard uses these days look nice, but aren't of the highest quality. It would be nice if they would go back to Guild branded TKL cases, but considering the CMG owns Humicase, that's not very likely.

I've never been much of a fan of thermoplastic cases like the Martin and Ovation type, but my opinion has changed with the discovery of Hiscox cases like the one that came with my Lowden (and @6L6 agrees). If you really want to get a nice lightweight, high quality case for the D55, check them out. If you add one to your cart, and don't complete the transaction, they'll send you a 15% off coupon code!

The first one's case was flawless. This one, not so much. I'm sure the Hiscox cases are great, but it just grinds my gears to have to put more money into this thing when it's already been such a hassle.

+1 on Hiscox cases. (They came with my Lowdens too.)

The MIC Guild cases that Oxnard uses are not as good as what used in New Hartford, Tacoma or late Westerly. I think the little sponge holder thingies in my Humicases are worthless and I don't use them.

I hear you. There comes a point sometimes when I simply refuse to continue to support bad product or service, and return the item and fire 'em.
Might be small solace but I'll be damed if I'm gonna let 'em keep my money on top of everything else.

Another Hiscox fan. 6L6 turned me on to them. The plastic Martin case I got with my D 35 Custom was falling apart. Hiscox is a very utilitarian tank. Light and bullet proof. I love the Ameritage case I got with my Santa Cruz. It is like a Bently to Hiscox's 70s Mercedes. My bet for protection is the Hiscox.

Sorry you're having a bad experience, mine is fine other than something glued in crooked.

Not to pile on . . . but the two Avalons that i was absurdly foolish to let go both had Hiscox cases and both cases were on point with a boat load of coolness and protection.

I feel for you. Especially because I have absolutely no complaints with mine. The fit and finish is superb. It came with my D-20. First of all, the lid fits perfectly and the strap is plenty long enough that the top stays open without holding it, even though I do just out of habit and to stay safe. The base for the humidifier in the lid on mine looks like it is inset into the lid a little deeper and the screws are painted over with a plastic of some sort. They show no sign of corrosion. That said, I do not use the humidifier much unless I am going to a festival for a long weekend or something like that. I'm wondering if you use that humidifier in the lid to humidify your guitar on a continuous basis. I don't do that. Even though the screws are not corroding in mine, it might be a good idea for me take them out and replace them with brass or stainless screws. I know I have some laying around in the shop. So thanks for that heads up.

The D-20 is for a specific purpose and generally only goes out for an afternoon a couple times a week. I like the case, but I don't think I would try to fly with it or even go for a couple weeks on the road with it. It certainly is not built for that kind of abuse. And it is heavy. But it does serve my purposes well, just to go out on Sundays and play with friends.

Y'know, I always wondered, is that pronounced Hiscox or Hiscox?

Yes! It is.

Don's Avalon came with a Hiscox case, as well. We knew it had a case because we asked. When they went in back and brought it out when we took it home I was dead impressed!! Those are SUCH nice cases!!
So he bought it 'cause of the case? That's a new one, gotta admit.

No, he knew he wanted it and I knew that I wanted him to have it (so I could play it) and we knew it came with a case. We just assumed some generic thing. So all the paperwork was done and payment made when they brought the case out!! That's a plus!! Icing on the cake, I think it's called!! (y)(y)

My Oxnard case is subpar compared to the New Hartford and Tacoma cases. The Oxnard case is okay, but its top is a bit catawampus.

So a company who bought Guild from Fender.... and then took over the brand, THEN either created a case business or took it over and now... the cases suck?? That's really sad. Maybe (I'm sure) Yamaha will fix this!!!
