To my eye the rosette has the same color tone as the top. My guess is that the lacquer was tinted amber, which makes the top look darker.

Hello strings,

I can't read the ad, but it's also possible that the seller is confused. I believe at least one of the recent GAD classicals has a cedar top. Maybe they saw that on the Guild web site and got confused.

Thought I coud identify sprucetops. In this case I am not convinced. The description says its cedar. Hans' Book says that Mark IIs have nothing but sprucetops (which I prefer anyway). What do you think?

Hello strings,

Around 1970 Guild started using Cedar tops on their classical guitars, whereas in earlier years thy used spruce. Cedar would be used off-and-on during the '70s and it is safe to say that they used both during that particular period. A Mark 2 from the early '80s should have a spruce top but I would not bet on it. When looking at photos it is often hard to say what species they used because Guild used a dark toner on their classical guitar tops, which sometimes gives the impression that you're looking at cedar, which is not always the case. However, when I look at the photo from the auction, I think this one has a spruce top.

Sincerly,

Hans Moust

Thank you Hans! Looking at picture No. 6, I also think its spruce. Picture 1 looked more like cedar to me. I wonder what the seller replies.

Thank you all!
