Hi I'm new to the forum. I bought a D-30 new about 8 years ago. The ID tag says Westerly, R.I. and the serial number is 302122. Is there any way I can find out when it was made?

Also, I keep hearing about the old Westerly plant. Why is it considered a good place to have gotten a guitar from? Is there anywhere I can go for more information on this?

Welcome aboard Gravel. Stick around; you'll like it here! Your serial number is after any of the databases on the web (such as this one), so I would guess it would be from 1999/2000 near the end of Westerly production, like my Pigpen.

Westerly is a bit of a holy site for the Guild faithful. Yes, a lot of great guitars were made there. I think the fact that more Guilds were built there for a longer period of time is why it's held in such high esteem by many of the cognoscenti. The D30 is a great guitar. I hope you have been enjoying this all these years.

Hello Gravel,

Welcome! I'm assuming the serial number of your D-30 is # AD302122, which would make it an instrument from 2001.

Sincerely,

Hans Moust

HI Gravel, Welcome aboard! We have a resident expert who's written abook on the first 25 years of Guild history and he generously donates his time here. Hi name is Hans Moust and if he doesn't see this question and answer it (usually within hours!) he'll be more that happy to answer you via the private messaging function. Sometimes he IS doing other stuff...
Guilds' website has some dating information but it is not 100% reliable and can be incomplete.
The Westerly plant simply had a reputation for producing very high-quality guitars at a very reasonable price consistently for over 30 years. There was more hand-construction than other makers like Gibson and Martin and many unique designs. By simple numbers more Westerlys were built than any other place so the percentage of high quality guitars with Westerly labels is simply larger. I also see evidence of "Fender bashing" by some avaricious internet sellers who I think are simply trying to inflate the values of their Westerly-labelled offerings by claiming Guild quality went down after Fender moved production to Corona. Some of these same guys conveniently ignore the fact that Fender owned Guild for 5 years before they shut down the Westerly factory in 2001, and at least two members here (I'm one of 'em) feel that late '90s Guilds are some of the best ever made. The other guy even has pre-Fender Guilds so his opinion's even better informed than mine!
I'm also the proud owner of a Corona built Guild and it's every bit as good as my Westerlys and in fact the finish is the best of all 3 even though that's one of the most frequently cited Corona defects. Other Corona-built owners agree with me. Several Tacoma owwners also feel their guitars are every bit as good as a Guild should be, including a couple who have guitars from Westerly.
In the end though, Westerly is kind of like the place where Guild established its legend and so it holds a special place in the hearts of Guild lovers. Most of the members here are old enough to have probably fallen in love with a Westerly as their first Guild.
Ha! I took so long writing this I see Hans has already been by!

Gravel,

I don't mean to sound arrogant, but there REALLY is no place like right here (and Hans' book) for information about Guild guitars.....believe me, I've looked. By the way, I have a D30.....incredible guitar.....enjoy.

Wow -- thanks for the overwhelming response to just my first post. I really feel welcomed and motivated to get the most out of my D-30.

Thanks Hans for pinpointing the date at 2001. And thanks adhorski for the excellent thumbnail history. That really gives me a good perspective on the tradition that my guitar came out of.

Why is my username "gravel?" Well, I had a rock band named The Flying Debris. When we broke up (note the pun), me and another guy from the band formed an acoustic duo. It seemed a logical next step to call ourselves Sand & Gravel, seeing as how we had just been The Flying Debris. A typical introduction: "We're Sand and Gravel. I'm Sand! He's Gravel!"

Welcome Aboard gravel!

My first Guid was 1995 D30E AB. Sweet guitar all around, from beauty to sound and I just sold it to a good friend of mine. :D

Enjoy your stay here in LTG!

Blessings,

Welcome aboard. I have a pair of D30s and love em both. I think they are one of the best kept secrets in the acoustic guitar world. Great for playing leads as they cut through the din of my buddies Martin HD28. You can usually find them for a great price and the maple used on them is really beautiful. Mine were built in 1990 and 1991, long before Fender came along.

Could anyone tell me how to post a pic of my guitar here -- some were asking for a pic. I tried the FAQs and found no info on how to do it. Tried clicking on Img on the toolbar but can't figure out where to go from there.

Thanks!
