In what years are the D-40 Guilds topped with Adirondack?
I know that the newer Tacoma and New Hartford D-40 guitars are but what about older Westerly D-40 guitars?

Actually the Tacoma and New Hartford Bluegrass models are Adirondack (red), the Richie Havens models are Sitka. I still haven't seen anything other than sitka for Westerlys. I thought Hans addressed that recently but I didn't see it in a search of his posts, when I tried to verify my memory.

The reason that I'm asking is because someone on another guitar forum said that he has a 1987 D-40 that has an Adirondack top.
I thought that these guitars were Sitka topped.

So doesn't anyone know if a 1987 D-40 has an Adirondack top?

I thought that they were Sitka topped until the move to Tacoma.

I am absolutely positive you are correct (only Sitka tops until Tacoma). I just can't find the thread that said it.

I'm sure you're right,see my comment above.
It's gonna sound snide but why's he saying that over there and not here? I'm thinking maybe the thing to do is turn it around on him and ask him (as politely as possible) how he "found out" it's Adirondack? If he says something like "Because of the grain", Hans has debunked thatt as an accurate way of identifying the species too.
Or maybe we'll all get surprised by what he tells us.

I don't really care enough to respond back to the guy that challenged me over on the other forum.
I would like to know for my own purpose though.
I want a Guild with Adirondack [pipe dream] but I can't justify buying new.
Thanks for your answers,
TMG.

Now I understand. My sympathies are with you. The magic word is "Bluegrass", Special or Jubilee. Be advised a couple of people have observed that new Adi tops somehow feel and sound pretty "tight" and may take some time and effort to "play in". Oer member Twocorgis actually sold off his New Hartford D40 for that reason, didn't think he was going to be able to give it enough time.

Well to each his own. The first time I played a Guild Tacoma adi-topped D50 I was smitten, had to have one. I was originally going after a D55, but REALLY preferred the D50 sound. Bought a Tacoma D50 shorter thereafter. It's still my go to guitar, three years later.

Played a adi-topped D40 next to the D50 sometime later. They are VERY similar sounding guitars
