Yeh, I saw that, I'm looking forward to seeing the D-40 review.

In August issue they reviewed 12 strings ranging in price from $330 to $3,000+. They reviewed a GAD JF30 12 for the $1,000 to $1,499 range. Little mention of Guild's 12-string heritage, and I wish they'd reviewed an F-512, rather than a GAD model. I sometimes think AG is too enamored of Martin, Taylor, Breedlove and Larrivee and neglects Guild, but then I am biased. But, biased or not, I'm still right. :) :) :)

Does the Martin J12-40E look like like a copy of a Guild 12er, or is it just me?

One reason I dropped my subscription.

DITTO on my subscription. It's too bad as the mag had a lot of good stuff but they consistently put all Guild product on the back shelf - if at all.

I think their problem is with FMIC, not with Guild guitars. FMIC might make acoustic guitars, but they aren't an acoustic guitar company. Two years ago, AG had a free-lancer write an article about Guild acoustic guitars. Apparently, AG turned it over to FMIC so they could see (approve?) it in advance. According to the author who posted here 2 years ago, FMIC edited the article into a puff-piece which AG published. The author didn't say why AG caved in ... but they did.

Just got my new Acoustic Guitar mag. and tore through it looking for the D40 article. After the second fruitless time through, realized its only the Sept. issue. Duh..

Hi bassmyf; I don't subscribe to it ... is there much FMIC/Guild advertising in it? Any at all? John

I do subscribe and last I noticed FMIC was advertising bi-monthly. Just a one page ad not upfront or in the back... After Bill Schultz passed, I've heard that FMIC was run by some Warton School MBA's... I expect the worst.

Could very well be the kiss of death.
In multi-line firms, every brand has to have a division manager to fight for advertising/public relations budget, sales price discount authority ... :( :?

I've been subscribing to AG for several years, and it seems I never see Guild ads. Within the last year or so they ran an article called "Six Guitars that Changed History" or something like that. You know, a classic Martin Dreadnought, a classic Gibson Gibson, etc. When it came time to profile a ground breaking 12er, they picked . . . A Taylor! Sheesh.

Hey capnjuan,

My ex-partner in Guitarchives, photographer Edward Susanna, once told me that most people who work in the advertising business agree that 50% of the advertising budget is throwing away money. The problem is that they don't know which 50%.

Maybe I should have posted this in 'The Funny Papers'.

Sincerely,

Hans Moust

The man in charge is Bill Mendello, who took over for Bill Schultz in 2005. Mendello was already the COO before becoming CEO.

I don't know anything about him except that he was on the press releases when the factory transition was in flux. Apparently, he's been around a while, guys.

Edit: I just looked this up on the web, and found out the following... Mendello was there with Schultz when they bought Fender back. This is not a newbie.

"Schultz and Mendello completed a leveraged buy-out of Fender Musical Instruments, then a division of CBS(Cell Broadcast Service) in March of 1985. Since that time they have rebuilt the once-struggling company by restoring its legendary status among musicians and music enthusiasts alike, and today FMIC is the undisputed world leader in musical instruments"
