Trivia

OOOOOOO - Now you're in my realm - Celtic/British Folk. The answer is definitely Steeleye Span - in the days of Maddy Prior, Peter Knight, Nigel Pegrum, Bob Johnson, Tim Hart & Rick Kemp - the "classic line-up" on such albums as "Now We Are Six", "All Around My Hat" and "Parcel of Rogues". Man they were - ARE - incredible.

Here's something else anyone care to guess at the group that features comedian Billy Connolly AND Gerry Rafferty?

OK - one final thing - all of you involved in this conversation go out and rent (or purchase) "Still Crazy" with Billy Connolly, Bill Nighy, Jimmy Nail, Hans Matheson, and Steven Rea. A romp of a grand film in which a heavy metal band from the 70's reunites after 20 years. Hilarious..in the vein of Spinal Tap, but very British and very subtle.

Anyone????

It was the "humblebums" - Rafferty evidently got annoyed that Connolly's humor was become more popular than the music and left to ultimately form Stealers Wheel (Stuck in the Middle With You). Truly, if you get a chance - especially if you were playing in the 70's - see "Still Crazy". Goodnight all!

I thought Mady Pryor might catch your attention. They did some amazing stuff.

I have no idea on the Connolly and Rafferty band name, although I found a 2 CD set called Songs & Comedy By Billy Connolly and Gerry Rafferty($9.99).

I'm glad my innocent 'post' brought this little exchange about.

As I said, Celtic/British Folk music is not exactly my thing. I'm rather pleased that my guess of Steele Eye Span was right.

As you have suggested, SmithfieldFair, I will look for "Still Crazy". My wife is a fan of British comedy.

Hoodahell is Gretchen Wilson? I jut read about her today on the Steel Guitar forum.

Some of the greatest folk-rock was Brit. Steeleye, Bert Jansch, pentangle, richard Thompson, who am I leaving out? I'd rather listen to that than...who's the cult figure who died young and got cremated in the desert?

Who???

You are thinking of Gram Parsons - considered one of the founding fathers of the 70's country-rock movement. Flying Burrito Brothers, Byrds, Emmylou Harris/Greivous Angel. Many see the Eagles as a direct result of Parsons' love of country music and his blending with rock and roll. Of course, not that I'm knowledgeable or a fan of country music per se, but many would also say that the current trend in country/pop is a direct result/consequence of people like Parsons. The family tree goes on up from him to Poco, Loggins & Messina, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and so on.

Red Neck Woman

Darryl - BTW - I'm not a fan of Gretchen Wilson - the self-styled "Red Neck Woman" - but I did watch about 10 minutes of Austin City Limits recently and she was on there. As previously reported, her Qball-topped guitarist played a sunburst Guild acoustic - but the sound is so 'ify' on both Austin City Limits and Soundstage that there is almost no differentiation in rock-oriented bands as to be able to hear what they sound like. Musical mush most of the time and often the lead guitar is even audibel. That was expecially disappointing with such presentations as Tom Petty (with his big Guild 12-string) and other shows that should have been a rare treat. Of course, PBS - while being the only channel airing such long concert footage - is also famous for such terrifically horrendous sound on these programs - such as the Cream reunion concert - GHASTLY sound! Of course, Gretchen Wilson doesn't play Guild evidently - I just saw the new Acoustic Guitar Magaziner and there's an advert there for her playing Epiphone. Hmmm, I never even knew she played guitar. Just bits....

Oops - so much for not previewing - my last post should have said the lead guitar "isn't even audible" and there's no such thing as a "magaziner" - unless he's some superhero who swims beneath the surface. Obscure, I know. dbs

DB---I guess I don't have to tell you this, but that need for "word smithing" only get's worse each year!!

It will be interesting to see if Gretchen stays around or just flashes in the pan!!

I think newly recuited, University of Texas "Audio Engineers" is the reason the sound can be so iffy on Austin City Limits. Of course it is the only place to see acts like that on TV "regularly"!!
