I can't remember ever seeing a post claiming the sides had a significant impact on tone or volume. In fact we've even seen some unusual guitars with a side soundhole for the player's increased perception.I do believe I would of heard lot's of complaints, and not just on this guitar but any guitar they cut a big chunk out if people were having issue's or losing resonance or sound. I think you lose more from having a UST between the saddle and the bridge than you do from a barndoor in the side. I'm always wondering if that's part of the reason my Richie Havens D40 is (or was) actually the sonic "runt" of the litter.....although it's finally opening up some, volume-wise.
Finally, since it's sealed off by the Fishman's cover plate itself, I'd be surprised if you could tell any difference from one wiithout a side mounted control panel.
