I am trying to revive my 1980 d40 that I abused severely as a youth. The pick guard had shrunk among other Things It's raw wood under the pick card. Should I put lacquer on the raw wood before I put another pic guard on. I saw some of the internet luthier guys saying they put liquid superglue- C A glue over the raw wood. There's only one little spot where some of the top came up with the pick guard. The rest of it is in is pretty good shape. There's a crack at the sound hole right under the fretboard. Lacquer, shellac, super glue???
Anyone know where to get a replacement pick guard

Get a hold of Taylor at Holter PGs, and he'll make a copy that's a hair oversized to cover the old outline. I'd lightly coat the bare spot with clear shellac before gluing down the new one. Check the crack from underneath with an inspection mirror to see if it's running up the top too far. if needed, have a shop luthier glue and cleat, but if it's small, a fingertip of Titebond may be good enough.

Thank you, There's quite a ridge at the spot where the pick guard was. Apparently they sprayed the Lacquer right over the top of the pick guard. Seems ridiculous to me that they wouldn't finish the guitar first and then put the pick guard on. I don't get it but I guess martin did the same thing

Because the finish wouldn't adhere to the top as well as glue would, in fact, any lifting/shrinking of the guard would just pull finish up with it.
In the late '90's they did go to stick-on 'guards over fully finished tops.
