Hello, I'm new to the forum and in search of my first guild. I have read many topics and posts here. Tons of valuable info. After saying that, I have GAS already and even got started yet. I'm not stuck on these two models, but they may be best suited for the style(s) I like to play. I'm mainly a flatpicker/ strummer, do some fingerpicking although not that well, play some slide too. Blues, Rock, Folk etc.. (clapton, harrison, dylan, the band, elmore) I plan on spending just under $1,000. Has anyone here had any experience playing slide on the f47? I'm open to all opinions. Looking for a versitile guitar in that price range. Thank you in advance for your time and consideration.

Here is another great one for under $1K: the DV 52. I have the DV 72 (more bling) and loooooooove it. Rosewood dread that in many opionions is extremely underrated. I'm also not much of a finger picker, but like to play around with it every once in a while. BTW, welcome!

I'm not a slide player at all, but it seems to me that with slide playing included in the mix, mahogany or maple might be a better choice than rosewood. Probably no hard and fast rules apply, though. It's more about what your personal preferences are.

The F-47MCE is the guitar for you: it's more versatile than a dreadnaught, works well for fingerpicking (although the contemporary series with large nut are more indicated for this technique), for strumming and also for soem soloing.

I'm with rob, that DV-52 is gonna be a steal even at $1,000.00

They remain, in my opinion, the best value in vintage Guilds if you compare all its deluxe appointments, and they ring like a bell :D

It's also nice to play - well balanced, light, and a comfortable thin neck profile.

Not that I have a biased opinion or anything

Of the two mentioned, I think the D50 would be a better slide guitar. I agree with Grammy that the F47 is one mean fingerpicking machine. Something about the neck on those beauts.

I see someone has listed another DV52 on the auction site. This one starting at $1,000.00.
Yeesh, that seems high. Maybe these guys aren't the deal they used to be. :(

Hans Moust is the definitive guru on these things, but it looks like it may be 1982.

Got pics?

Opinions please. Later this week I'm going to check out a '83 (thanks Hans) D-50. It's supposed to be in excellent shape. Now there are a few on the auction site in my price range. Some D-55's as well. Question: Older or newer? Thanks again everyone for your help and opinions, much appreciated.

In my opinion it doesn't really matter. I've played great Hobokens, Westerlys, Tacomas, and even Conneticuts (haven't tried a Cali one though). The Conn D-50 I played has been my favorite D-50 so far...except for the price.

I would prefer a Tacoma D-50 for a variety of reasons, for one thing, they're real cannons! Adi top, scalloped bracing, lots of ebony - very similar to the DV-52, which was a step in between the old D-50 and the D-55. For my hard earned dollars, it would be a Tacoma D-50 or a DV-52 (only built in Westerly).
