A pet peeve of mine is electric players using clip on tuners who don't turn their volume off while tuning.

A clip on snark does not ruin aesthetics for me.
Totally agree. No clip on anywhere for me while performing. Just in the bedroom or rehearsal. While performing, when the volume pedal is backed to zero, the tuner comes up on my pedal.

Only tuner I use. I’d rather mark up the soundhole than be one of those guys that leaves marks on his headstocks because he never removes the clip on tuners. See it on reverb all the time.
There’s a 1970 Brazilian F50R on reverb now and in all the photos the guitars got the tuner stuck on the headstock. YUCK.

Older tuners could leave marks on the headstocks, the way older guitar stands left marks on the necks. But that problem was resolved years ago. I leave my Snarks on the headstocks of my guitars for days, even weeks. In one instance, I put a guitar in its case not realizing the Snark was still on the headstock. When I opened the case again a couple months later, there wasn't even a hint of a mark.

Though I have the tuners facing the back of the headstock so they're mainly visible to me, I don't care very much how they look on stage. Every piece I do is in a different tuning and I usually have two or three guitars on stage at a time, all in different tunings, in order to minimize having to do major retuning onstage. Even so, I'm constanty checking and adjusting the tuning, and need the Snarks "at-the-ready."

That's OK with me. I'd rather look dorky than play out-of-tune.

I don't play out, so this is only from a home user perspective.

My tuner is firmly attched inside my smartphone. I use the Peterson Strobosoft tuner, and I have for over a decade. It is as accurate as any tuner out there (with the prossible exception of the Turbo Tuner, which I am unsure if it is still being made). The app still has the same .1 cent accuracy as the stand alone Peterson units, but it is/was $9.99, and a decade later, I still haven't paid anything more for updates. I have added the sweetened guitar tuning pack, but that is a personal choice, the basic tuning app is just fine as is. it took a bit of time to get used to when I started using it, but its second nature now. I leave the cents readout on, and I call it good if its within 3 cents of perfect. I can also use it to check intonation on any guitars that I may be interested in buying.

I think Peterson got the Conn patents at some point in the past, after Conn pretty much went away. The strobe pattern is linear instead of rotational, but the actual note determination I think is the same.

But you can have both - tuners that will mark neither the headstock nor the soundhole exist. Some people just consider them less convenient ;-)

Looks fiddly to get in and out and I would probably drop it in too. Also would not work on guitars or other instruments that don't have a big soundhole (like Adamas). Pass.

I like my stand alone tuner/metronome. I think it's a Sabine. Don't like clip-ons, though in a noisy jam session they can be helpful. All that's really needed for tuning is one reference note.

I may be late to the party, but I never saw one of these before. Is this something any of you would use? I think it would bug me being in the soundhole like this...

3 or 4 years ago I bought a few of these and put them in the soundholes of a couple acoustics. They work good, are onobtrusive, easy to turn on and off and the display is easy to see by the player but almost invisible to anyone else. The footprint of the tuner is so amall that I can't see it affecting the sound of a guitar.

This one is a much better option, doesn't screw up the top vibration, and is virtually invisible to the audience, expecially if your guitar has a black headstock. That soundhole one looks like a PITA to turn on and off.

I have one of these on each of my guitars and my mandolin and my Ubass and my banjo. The new multi-color display takes some getting used to, but it's much faster.

these are my favorites. I like the older version instead if the newer ones. They work on 4 string electric basses(not sure about the fivers)

Korg makes something similar, fits in the sound hole. Called the Rimpitch-C2. I have several, have used them for several years and works well.

I have the sound hole tuner in my favorite guitar and like it better than the micro clip-on.
The tuner is very easy to read in strong light because the lip of the sound hole shades it.
They're almost invisible once mounted too.

Care has to be taken when removing this little tuner. They go in very easily, but removing them requires a small lever action. If a person was careless or wasn't paying attention, I think there's a possibility the tuner could pop a crack off the sound hole if removal was a little too forceful.
They come with very thorough instructions that show installation and removal clearly.

I have a bunch of the others, as they work well on any guitar or banjo I own. I like them.
