The Dave Clark Five were the first two concerts I ever saw. Both were at the Camden County Music Fair in Cherry Hill, NJ. It was a circular amphitheater covered by an orange and yellow tent. I saw Dave Clark Five there in 1966 and 1967.

In 1968, I saw Cream at the same venue. I was 11 and we discovered that the ushers left their posts after the second song or so, so you could just walk in. The music fair was walking distance from my house so, we hung in the parking lot until the concert started, then we just walked in and sat down.

There's a lot of talk that the DC Five lip synched live. I really don't know anybody who ever saw them live, but the talk around the water cooler is they actually didn't play live. Also, it's no secret that Clark used Bobby Graham to cut his drum tracks in the studio, which was not uncommon back then. Others have said that nobody in the band actually played on their records. It's obvious that Mike Clark sang the songs. So, if they didn't actually play live and didn't play on their records, does that mean they were a fraud? The first Boy Band?

JWSamuel, amazingly, I did the exact same thing. Was living in Cherry HIll at the time and we rode our bikes to the music tent and walked in to see Dave Clark because the ushers were gone. I think I was 8 years old.

Back in the day, my favorites were “Can’t You See That She’s Mine” & “Catch Us If You Can.” Still enjoy listening to them occasionally on CD.

I was mildly fond of the DC 5. Tracks like "Try Too hard" hold up pretty well, and I play that one on my radio show, but the band remains a mystery, and we'll probably never know the truth. Clark is 84 now, and he's not talking, nor is anyone else associated with the band.
