Once again "commercial" DNA testing is in the spotlight of CBC Marketplace, a consumer protection program on CBC TV.

Note that it is not necessarily the science that is bad but rather the application or non-application of the science for commerical purposes.

I love this one below. A native guy was very suspicous of a DNA testing service that specialized in revealing your native genetic heritage (in an effort to help you get a Government Status Card, something useful for many things if you are actually native and something very cool for wannabe pretendians). So he swabbed his dog. Guess what ....

"Once again", lol.

"Once again" people are duped, susceptible people are duped.

Nothing is real.
One thing is VERY real. Always has been, always will be. Greed, plain and simple. An in hospital DNA test and lab work can cost upwards of $1500. Some cockamamie private owned business offering one for $250? Buyer beware.

I have not reviewed the links.

It is well established that "DNA Testing" that links a sample to groups is suspect to some bias. If you are white and have European ancestry documented form other sources the DNA test has a chance of being correct when it reposts a possible linkage. But if you are non-white or have non-European ancestry, a lot of tests are uninformed guesses because there is not enough data to make a statistically significant correlation.

At one time people who were cynical about computers understood GIGO - Garbage In, Garbage Out. While that is not quite true of genetic testing you still need to understand the quality of the data that an input is being correlated with.

If there is a problem here it is with a Government agency that accepts DNA testing that correlates with a group as being some kind of proof. Testing that relates specific individuals is currently much more accurate.

Most people already know what they are, pure breeds like us - parents from an era where "misgenation" was inconceivable - or don't even care. I will never care to "know more".

"Populations with smaller, narrower gene pools, on the other hand, may be less successful when confronted with swift environmental change.

Inbreeding, the mating of individuals or organisms that are closely related through common ancestry, as opposed to outbreeding, which is the mating of unrelated organisms. Inbreeding is useful in the retention of desirable characteristics or the elimination of undesirable ones, but it often results in decreased vigour, size, and fertility of the offspring because of the combined effect of harmful genes that were recessive in both parents."

Looks like diversity is where it's at. This is probably why we need so many guitars/basses/amps/pedals/drums/cymbals/etc, all of the possible mating call scenarios. To assure the survival of the species.

My question is why do people care? Where you came from, where your people came from? It's mostly how you are and where you are now. Why such an intense desire to know extactly WHERE you came from and how you got here. (Sorry Chris, I know you're into this) I don't get the draw....

My wife did a test and found that even though her Mom's dad was born in Italy and the family has lots of grave stones in the towns cemetary, it came back with no Italian ancestry. As mentioned above, if they don't have enough sample data, it isn't going to be accurate.

Well for me I became curious as to who my birth parents were. I found my Birth mother and extended family . Never found out who my father was but have ideas but no exact idea .

After I found my birth mom and the extended family I started wondering about genetics what’s passed on gene wise along with what and who my siblings did for a living along with any achievements.

You see we/ I always hear you can be anything you want to be all you have to do is work hard .

The thing is I realized that the people who are saying this are the ones who are successful . Now maybe they had to kick and crawl their way up but at they all had a DNA advantage of some kind and it’s hard for me to believe otherwise .

So in my research my family , extended family , all were pretty much locked into lower blue collar jobs . I work in DOT to my surprise so did most of my brothers one in law enforcement . That’s odd I never knew them until a few years ago .

Now birth mom was married twice and that side of the family wasn’t much different in their job careers . I was a one night stand along with 2 others in between. Mom was a bit promiscuous. Lol

I wanted to know how far the nut falls from the tree , well as you read the above not far at all . Now I’m not stupid ( of course no one is saying that ) but I know where I fit in within reason of my capabilities.

There’s no way I’d be a doctor or lawyer or scientist. Which my Jewish family so wished for , architect ummmm possibly but it would be a stretch. Lol
I’m not sure if any of my dna is of Jewish descent other than converting over .

Now there’s a whole bunch of factors that can go either way in one’s success and or failure in life .

But over all our genetics are pretty much cut and dry so to say. How we learn differs. I learn from hands on more than book learning . Others learn better from book learning . Some of us don’t store memories well others have a photographic memory.

Honestly to me the ability to remember is the key to intelligence. My memory sucks . I don’t store everyday happenings.

I can’t even remember how I play or wrote my music . I don’t know if that’s how I was born or if I hit my head on something one to many times ? Just have no idea .

I feel that the way our species treats each other as to expected successes and failures is extremely faulted . It’s just like racism another form of prejudice.

Those who keep saying or thinking it’s your own fault you’re not successful is culturally taught more so then knowing the facts .

So that’s why I became curious to know about my DNA .

Now on the other side what’s weird is I’m into Native American, Celtic, Asian mostly Chinese, culture and music.

I have both Scottish and Irish in me that explains the Celtic but not the others of which I have zero dna . Lol 😂

Humans share DNA with animals. We humans actually share 60% DNA with bananas. So I guess is isn't so strange a dog would come back with a DNA match of some kind.

I have never been interested in my ancestry. I don't know my family tree past my grandparents. My brother and his wife are really into it though. He has traced our family tree back to the 1700s and we are mutts, so it has been an arduous task that he has worked on for decades and driven tens of thousands of miles tracing it down.

Anyway, his wife was told by her mother and grandmother that they were part native American. It was handed down from one generation to the next. She truly believed she was and had all these native American artifacts that she thought were part of her heritage. She took a couple DNA tests and found out that there is no native American in her. It was actually kind of devastating to her as her entire family believed they were and had identified with it culturally.

@Rayk

Excellent post above.

I tried to make the point way above that done properly, DNA testing can be useful within limits.

Non Scam

If relatives have had DNA testing done by one of the large commercial services, you can find probable relatives, probability ranging from modest to certainty. The police certainly use these services to help them find suspects by finding suspects's relatives from crime scene DNA. They also use the services for help in identifying John/Jane Doe bodies.

And, yes, there are distinctive genetic markers, such as a Y chromosome anomaly which is found only in Scandinavian men, but if you don't have it, it doesn't mean you are not a biological male of Scandinavian ancestry.

There are also legitimate medical uses of DNA testing.

Marginal Scam

But the "You are 2% Carpathian burled elm, 6% mongoose, 20% guanaco, 2% deadly nightshade, 60% processed cheese food slice, 5% platypus, 10% lemur, and 30% Norwegian blue parrot" sort of analysis is very suspect. Note that the numbers don't even add up correctly.

Total Scam?

And the "I'm human and I'll send my DNA off to a dog DNA testing service to see if I am a Great Dane/Poodle cross and what do you know--I am" analysis is more than suspect. It might even be criminal.

And so is the "I am am native so I will send my dog's DNA to a service specialising in native human DNA to see if my dog is native too and what do you know--it is" analysis.

It doesn't mean that the family history is wrong. I know of someone who is definitely of Apache ancestry--a known great grandmother was 100% Apache--there are family photos, documented family history, etc to show this. And yet this person allegedly has no native American DNA.

Did anyone else notice that our friend Ray did that lengthy post without using Rayspeak AT ALL?? Years cultivating my translation and understanding, and now my skill is null and void. Life just isn't fair. :p

Great post, Ray. I do think finding relatives (blood) because you're adopted is a bit different from wondering stuff about people from The Dark Ages that are so removed from us.

In my opinion legitimate (or "useful") DNA testing compares an individual sample to other individual samples. Dubious testing compares an individual sample to a statistically derived group.

I have a memory of a gated community, in Florida?, that was having a problem with people who did not clean up after their dogs. The Management Association proposed requiring every dog owner to submit a sample of their dog's DNA and then a sample from "uncleaned" poop would be compared to help find the culprit. My memory is that it didn't work as planned but the problem was compliance with the testing mandate and not the DNA comparison itself.

have you not noticed that I was lamenting about it few weeks ago?

When first reading his writing I just thought "The guy is nuts!" 😂
But I kept reading anyway - and found out that what he was saying made sense - even though wording was a bit - err . . . . - peculiar.
Then I grew to actually love it.
And now he's up anf cruelly gone and stopped it . . . . 😡

Like you - I thought life is unfair 😏

But then - when I first expressed my dismay - he explained it - and I understand 😍

More important than the way he writes is WHAT he writes - and so far very good 🥁 🎼 🐾 ☮️

Awe , I wrote a little thing on FB about my Mom she passed Friday . I always wrote stuff especially when I was young and smoking the pot , a lot . Lol

I wrote some things , poetry of a sort . Many times I was at the bar so when I left there was always bar napkins with my stories or writings laying about . Lol

Anyway it seems my few words for Mom were well taken something I didn’t consider or expect . I haven’t wrote and thing otherwise since that collaboration song I did years ago called last ticket . Anyway go figure ? 😂

Oh no thread veering about my mom . That can be another thread .

@Rayk I'm sorry to hear about your mom, Ray. Don is drunk and singing and I have to put music on soon to keep me from hearing this horribleness. Anyway, Ray, my friend, thanks for all the amazing music you bring to us. I'm grateful for you....
