When I was in the Scouts, we annually sold crates of oranges/grapefruits and Krispy Kreme doughnuts...but it was all done regionally w/ all proceeds staying regional. The national organization only depended on the big regional annual jamborees.(ours were at Goshen in Va) And even then, most of those people were also volunteers. They did'nt have 100 mil dollar pension funds. Nor should they.

I have contributed to Doctor's without Borders several times, through Norah Jones' fundraising events. Those were fun nights!

+1. I'm also a BSA Dad of two boys, as well as a Scout myself in younger days. Agreed on the importance of volunteers. Whatever is happening on the "business side" of BSA or GSA, there is no replacment for the experiences they get out of these orgainzations. One might even call them "priceless". My youngest earned Eagle Scout, and all I can tell you is he worked hard for it, but he got to do so many cool things along the way he would never have done otherwise.

For organizations like these, and many other charities, volunteering your time and energy helps them more than money does.
I could argue that I got more out of it than the kids did.

I have not heard much about pension funds, particularly of that amount. Source?
