It's supposed to be from a D4 acoustic electric. I have never noticed the squares around the numbers on a Guild headstock before.

I've also never seen the 'Made in U.S.A.' stamped on a headstock. Especially not level with the serial number.

Yes. The "CF" prefix was used for the D-4 from 1991-93. It was changed to "AD" in 1994. The serial you posted would be from 1992.

My question was about the appearance of the serial number, not the number itself. The squares around the individual numbers are something I have never seen before. Not on the 5 Guilds I have now nor the two or three others I have had.

Also note the Made In USA. Never seen that nor is it level with the numbers. Seems odd to me.

Yes, I've seen that before. I believe it's due to the amount of (excess?) pressure from the stamper or the type of stamper used at that time. Maybe Hans has an accurate explanation.

Also, you actually may see a date on guitars from late 1986 into early 1987. They stamped the date also, but that didn't make it past a year or thereabouts. But during that time, you got a date as well. Just FYI.

The squares around the numbers are because who ever punched in the number struck the number punch a little too hard!
Yeah, this guitar was made that week that Karen called out sick and that brute of a guy, Benji, took over for her. He was really heavy handed..... Karen was fine and back to work the following week. :p
