Did some of the Starfires come without a pickguard?
I found 1981 and it looks like it doesn't have a pickguard screw hole...
Looks pretty cool without a guard but is this the way some were shipped?

The one looks like it's only missing a knob cap.

You probably could have ordered it without pickguard, so it has no holes in the top and in the side.

Yes. In the early 80's Guild removed the pickguards from some of their models. I beleive 1980 model S-300's and Starfire 4's were two of the most notable models coming out of the factory without pickguards.

Learn something new all the time.
The guitar has a different look without the guard but looks great both ways.

This is the first early 80's guitar without a pickguard and with HB-1's that I've seen.Typically this model guitar has the XR-7 pickups. Hans has often said that HB-1 were always available if perferred.

It gets crazy when you start looking at all the details of these guitars for respective years...
the exceptions are out there just got to know what to look for before laying down the higher value for vintage gear...

FWIW, my 1984 Starfire IV with XR-7 pickups has no pickguard, and there's no evidence on the guitar that it ever had one.
