It’s a fact that my recently acquired ‘70 D-40 makes my other three dreads (and one jumbo), all solid wood, non-Guilds sound relatively weak and thin. I kept telling myself the D-40 just has a more overpowering sound, but it’s totally more rich, resonant, louder, with much greater sustain. I’ve never owned a high-quality Martin or Taylor, but I’ve owned some pretty fair acoustic guitars. The D-40 has spoiled me; I want to hear and play more Guilds. I’m not a huge believer in the age-related “opening-up” effect— I’ve had forty-year old fairly high-end guitars that weren’t that great. I just think this one was made great—yesterday I was lying on my back, playing, looking edgewise into the soundhole when I ended a tune with an A minor and the guitar sustained this otherworldly, almost electronic A minor hum, sounded like the effect you get from rubbing the rim of a crystal glass, but with bass notes. Incredible sustain. Very nice guitar all around. I see why you guys like these things so much.

:) Sometimes, in my music room, that also houses a billiard table and a bunch of Guilds (8 of them), you can break a rack on the pool table and get that hum. Gives me goosebumps sometimes.

Sometimes they need to be woken up (or have their saddles leveled on the bottom).

I feel the same way about my recent ('08/'09) Tacoma-built D40. I HAVE owned some pretty nice acoustic guitars, and this Guild ranks right up there with the best I've had of Gibson (AJ), Martin (D18), Larrivee (D-05), and Breedlove.

A good guitar is a good guitar, no matter who built it, when, or where. Same can be said for guitars that don't live up to their price point.

Yeah, it's a goosebumpy sound. Never thought a spruce and mahogwood box could create that particular effect. Love to be able to get that on an electric.
