I'd like to determine if the tuning machines on my 1965 F-30 are original. Hans' book (page 41 and elsewhere) does not show any similar three-on-a-plate machines (with the oval plastic buttons). I wonder, however, if these tuners fall into the category of what Hans describes as "Japanese heads... [for] lower-line instruments from the sixties and seventies [that are] cheaper imported machine heads." (page 41). Hans' photo for this entry shows tuners with metal buttons, which also appear in most of the photos for mid-60s F-30s I've seen.

The machines on my guitar work -- not great, but serviceably. I'd be much less apt to replace them with something better if they were original. Does anyone have an idea if Guild used these in the mid-60s?

Thanks, everyone....

Hello Ncrews,

Yes, those tuners were used during that particular period, although the same tuners with metal knobs were more common.

They were made by Van Ghent . The Japanese tuners were introduced at a later date.
