Here is John Denver playing his F612 #1 in 1971: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RYryU5b_10k

I would encourage anybody who hasn't watched this video, to do so. The Tom Jones duet is kind of awesome, other than the awkward background singers. But the real gem is the little guitar duet tacked onto the end of it, which shows off that custom Guild 6-string he had to great effect. Anybody who doesn't think Denver was a legitimate guitar player might be convinced otherwise...

That's cool. Beginning with the Chad Mitchell trio in the early 60's, we might conclude that with all the experience that John Denver was getting, that some truly skilled guitar players would show him some ditty's along the way.

Who's he playing with?

Who is JD playing with on the snippet at the end of the Tom Jones Show vid? Big Jim Sullivan, a very prominent English '60's session player who played with Tom Jones from '69 to '74. Lots of youtube stuff on Big Jim.

If you meant who'd he play with in the Chad Mitchell Trio days, I don't really know. A lot folks played with the Trio, like Jim McGuinn, but the ones I have seen on vids mostly provide folkie color (legitimacy?) for the Trio. Here's a wikipedia entry for the Trio. When you scroll down, you can see a list of all the personnel:

Well, we can all only hope that some truly skilled guitar players will condescend to show us something, someday. Until then, I guess we will learn what we can from the unskilled players.

On several occasions, John Denver said the loved bluegraqss music but wasn't a good enough guitar player to play it.
His strong suit was fingerstyle. He left the flat picking to his lead guitar players.
One of the reasons that I enjoy playing songs from John Denver is that he had a way of making some simple chords and picking patterns sound very full and complex.
The 12 string guitar is a very good tool for this purpose. John Used the 12 string on many of his songs.

Did the F-612 have a flat back?

The F-612 was produced during a period that a lot of experiments were done and I have personally seen several F-612s that had arched laminated rosewood backs.

Thank you Hans.
This is what I have thought was the answer.
I was told by someone that I feel should know, that at least one of John Denver's F-612 guitars had an arched laminated Rosewood Back.
I would love to play one.

Nice! Really enjoyed that. Kind of wish JD hasn't gone Taylor in the 90s. Is there a story on that?

My guess is that John suffered from the same disease that many of us here have. GAS!
Remember that he also played Ovation and Yamaha before moving to Taylor.
