I wish I hadn't given up on piano. My teacher told my Mom "You're wasting your money - he will never learn to read music."

My piano teacher was my mom. For whatever reason she had difficulty letting me practice and as a result almost every time I was at the piano it became a lesson. I was allowed to quit after a year if I took up another instrument but I wonder what would have happened if I had had another teacher?

Or another mom?!

Thanks for all of the replies.

It seems we've veered off into autoharps and pianos. But I guess that's to be expected.

I'll keep working on getting my nails stronger before trying acrylic nails. Some good information here.
Thank you!

Are you sayin' you have a problem with that?

:)

Since your question was about nails and you had several good answers the veers should be understood as meaning there isn't really anything else to add to what we have said about strengthen nails.

I tried some kind of acrylic nails, but it was just too much monkey business for me.

I'm down to bare fingertips on my picking fingers now. I've built up major calluses; they work especially well through my acoustic amplifier.

I still do a lot of flatpicking as well.

A while back, I spoke with a local classical guitar teacher about my nails. He gave me a guide on nail shapes based on nail type.

Classical guitarists use different nail shapes: rounded, sloped, flat, or pointed. Right now, I'm using the rounded shape for my thumb. And the sloped shape for my fingers. This seems to be helping.

Interesting! I use my fingernails exclusively. Not even sure I could use a pick anymore! My thumb nail I shape to match how it hits the strings but the rest of my finger nails are mainly ”rounded”. I have no issues with nails breaking but find that if I have been using solvents without gloves (naphtha and such), my nails are more likely to break.

I like that illustration as a guide, using a filed down, rounded off Fred Kelly 'Slick Pick' thumbpick only and part fingertip/part nail attack, this shape mimics my Red Bear flatpick 'bevel' choice as close as possible.

Big believer in collagen here!

After losing over 85 lbs, I had a lot of extra skin hanging off of me. One of the ways I read to remove this is to take collagen daily.

I've been taking 6 tablets of this a day for a couple of years and now I'm starting to see abs!

Side benefits are extremely durable nails and thicker hair!
I'm a life long bassist who suffers from psoriasis. I've always played finger style, and I've never been able to keep nails without them splitting and breaking. I'm now playing finger style on guitar as well (a pick feels really awkward to me), and it's been frustrating. While searching for nail health remedies, I came across this forum thread. I just bought some of the Youtheory Collagen tablets to see if It will help me. I hope it works!🤞🏻

Please post a report. I fingerpick with bare flesh. Can’t keep nails due to psoriasis.

Try a nail hardener like Sally Hansons Hard as Nails.
Even has nitrocellulose in it.
Product called Rock Tips. (this is surgical glue)
I even use liquid bandage, works pretty good.
Collagen helps a lot.
No matter what, when my wife wants me to do some work around, I end up screwing up my
picking nails.

Finger picking the BR, long ago.

I don't remember much but it was a nasty cold winter north Texas storm while I was playing this...

Exactly what I have done for decade

I historically keep my nails trimmed and finger pick with my finger tips, vs the nails. I guess I just got used to it over the decades of this approach. IMHO, I would never want to glue anything unnatural to my fingernails.
And it's the same here. I see so many people use a thumb pick with bare fingers otherwise, and I've tried that too. I can get the technique down without an issue, but the thumb pick always overpowers the fingers and all I get are bass strings. I'm just very comfortable with bare thumb/fingers.

Use lemon juice on them because it's good, ............

Squeeze drops of garlic oil on them straight from the press and let it dry.

Then toss a head of bib lettuce, frizze, cucumber and tomato with your perfumed fingers to make a refreshing summer time lunch
