I stopped by our local PREMIUM guitar shop (Maple Street Guitars) on Saturday. Finally, there was a Taylor 12 string to be tried out. They had a 355CE hanging on the wall. When I finally got a chance to ask if I could try it, the manager mentioned that they had just taken in a Taylor Jumbo in that morning on trade. Needless to say, I asked if I could try it also. Well, long story short, a 1998 855 came home with me. WONDERFUL action (tho I feel that is the technician rather than the guitar, my Guild will be going to him). The sound is much 'brighter' (more treble?) than my JF30-12 but they both have a wonderful sound. :(

Well, say two dozen hail Guilds and you'll be forgiven. I too have been tempted by an older 855, and must confess that I have given in to the temptation of a Leo Kottke Taylor 12  Congrats and have fun!

Tell me, my son: Do you feel your sin is in owning a Taylor or in believing that the Taylor is in some sense better than a comparable Guild? If the former, then you can be forgiven. It is dangerous, but sometime wise, to adopt the ways of The Enemy in order to better understand and counter the temptations that will inevitably come your way. However if you have strayed by believing that what is Best is not best then there are deeper issues at hand and your very soul is in peril. If that is the case then perhaps we should continue this over pancakes at St. Alfonzo's.

Ironically, about 7 years ago, I decided to treat myself to a 12 string. I was offered a traded-in Taylor (don't remember the model), but was leaning towards a Guild as I always wanted a Guild 12 since the late 60's. I thought the Taylor was a little too tinny - also, tjhe intonation was noticeably off at the 12th fret. So I went ahead and got my first Guild - a JF12-30. The rest is history...

I do like my ''fat bottomed girls"! The blonde (Guild JF30-12) will always be my first love. But, the brunette (Taylor 855) is wonderful in her own way. :)

It was a Taylor 12 (355) that first put the idea in my head of getting a 12 some day. One of the easiest playing guitars I have ever encountered, including 6s. Have since tried Alvarez and Yamaha and they were also very nice. However none of them had the tone I'm looking for, wish there was a 512 I could try. Good chance I will be in Nazareth this summer so will have a chance to try the J40-12, but still want to try a 512.

Harmony H-173 bought in 1960 (retired), Alvarez AC60S 2008, Eastman AC320ce 2008 "Hybrid", Guild GAD-JF30E(blonde) 2008, Guild JF55 1997, Guild D25M 1974, Martin Grand J35E 2009

Hello Phlyter,

If you give me the serial number, I should be able to tell you when it was made.

You can PM me if you prefer that!

Sincerely,

Heeheehee... Well, yes just working on the Blues book and as for the ABBEY ROAD STUDIOS music stand, I don't know 'bout that. Folks gave me the brass music stand when I got my Bachelors of Music - Educations thirty some years ago. Haven't hardly used that degree since. Only taught for two years.
