I was in a local pawn shop today and spotted a nice Guild GAD 12 string. Dread, sunburst finish, original case. Looks to be in near mint condition. Rosewood back and sides. I did not get the model number. Most of the GAD dread 12's I've seen online are mahogany back and sides. Is this a discontinued model maybe??

Even with very old and nasty looking strings it sounded terrifc. Pretty easy player for a 12'er.

Comments????

News to me too. Called Guild when I was looking for a case for the ol' D-212 and they said that they don't make a Dread 12 anymore and haven;t for a while.

You sure about that, keel? A rosewood dread 12er that's a GAD? News to me...

Maybe I've got it wrong. I'll have to go back and take another look. Good excuse for another excursion.

Maybe the Chinese are letting production variations out of the factory just like the old days?

Some of the Mahogany used on GAD's is very different looking form the Mahogany that I'm used to.
I had a JF48 that had very beautiful back and side wood that didn't look like any Mahogany that I have ever seen.

This may be what you are looking at.
Not sure what kind of Mahogany it is but it sure looks nice.

That's the model I was talking about except the poster mistook the G for a 6. That's a GAD-G212. Mahogany.

Oh, and indeed, most mahogany that we see on guitars from 10 years ago or more is stained dark. Mahogany is not a very dark wood in natural form.

That's close to what I remember although the back and sides on the pawn shop guitar were much darker, with the typical rosewood colour variations. I did not think twice, I just assumed rosewood. Now I'm very curious but seems pretty likely it's just a dark mahogany. I'll go back in the next few days and report in.

FWIW I can scoop this up for under $500 and am pretty tempted to do so.

Keel, if you like it, then do it. The opportunity to play these guitars in the music store and compare 'em is worth the few extra bucks than buying them online. You know exactly what you're getting.

That said, if you're not in a rush, there's always a 12er or two floating around the board here... You probably won't get into a US Guild (used) for much less than 5 bills, but for around 7 or 8 you can get something a lot more special.

All that said, make sure you try the GAD-JF3012 before you go for the G212 version. I was quite happy with the GAD version (it wasn't quite comparable to the US version, but it blew everything else away in the store).

Yeah, I called up China to see if my Baby's over there (rings a bell? ) and they said they had a leftover stock of braz rosewood they decided to throw in their production lines...

But seriously, as TMG said some mahogany grain can sometimes be confused with rosewood.....in a dark pawnshop

Somewhat similar, I'd say, to the confusion many of us have encountered in dark/dimly-lit bars and taverns?

Just a thought,

Very good comments. Thanks. I'm not really in the market for a 12 string. Recently sold one after deciding I just did not play it all that often. Nice guitar, martin d12-1, but never really bonded with it. The Guild in question really sounds good and is a much easier player.

St. Pete and Fla. in general, is lousy with pawn shops. Dozens in the immediate area, mostly stocked with junk. But, amongst all the junk you do find a few treasures.

I've only experienced one GAD guitar - an F-30. It was beautifully put together, with obvious care and attention to detail, of fine woods and materials.

Assuming this GAD-G212 to be at least the same quality, $500 would be a very good price.

Wow!! That's a great Fla. pawn shop find. The "treasures" if you will I have found are usuallly rather unknown brands or something the pawn shop owner just missed. Good example was a very cool late 70's /early 80's EKO Ranger 12 string. Made in Italy very cool old guitar. Just needed a good cleaning, fresh strings and a set up. Another one, a Tak Jumbo that was a Guild knockoff. Headstock with a T, instead of the G shield, maple back and sides. Horrible botch up of the saddle and nut. Filthy dirty, but under the crud was a very nice guitar. New nut, saddle, a good cleaning and she played beautifully. Not the actual guitar but looks like this.
