The more I think about this the more upset I make myself. The fact that you have no control over a family member's FB page means they can post all sorts of stuff to their "friends" that should be kept in the family. At this point there's nothing a family member has posted (to my knowledge) that is all that private.

I'm not a FB "friend". I'm your family. Call me. Write me a letter. Send me an email.

Peace

Yes, and I am also very concerned about exactly that issue.
However the younger people see that completely different.
I think it needs education to tell them what consequences positing the wrong stuff on FB can have to them and to others. I think older family members should have a kind of obligation to educate younger family members, in a way it was done since hundreds of years in the traditional way. The main problem is that today many parents are both working and spend way to less time with their kiddos. And many just don't care what their kids do in their spare time. Now lots of kids use Facebook not longer on their PC at home (where parents had some kind of control at least), but the kids use smartphones now! (Where most parents don't even understand what the smartphone does!). Scary? Yes. But you can't stop Facebook anymore. Facebook has 845 Million (!) members around the globe already! It does not matter if one persons stops using it.
One more: Facebook reached one trillion (!) pageviews in the month of June 2011, making it the most visited website in the world.

I'm with Ralf. Lock it down and "friend" only people with whom you have had
real face time.

Social media is not going away and if, like me, you want to maintain contact with
distant, mobile and far-flung progeny across time zones and hemispheres, it's a text
message or FB. And if, like my better half, you are an education professional and believe
you need to reach students where they live - social media is the channel.

Is it for everyone? Nope.

Trying hard not to let my geezer show,
Frosty

Frosty, I try to keep my inner geezer under control. Sometimes it works, sometimes.... not so much.

Something Facebook is handy for: Guild Website has been revamped and redesigned. They announced it on Facebook. That's a good thing. Check it out: http://www.guildguitars.com/

FWIW, it's all about social media and in direct proportion to how sociable you want to be, regardless of any other factors.
It's also voluntary participation so if you don't want to play.....don't. 8)

NBD, much ado about nada,

Friendface!!!Friendface!!!Friendface!!! Friendfaaaaaaaaaaaace!!!

We have this site vkontakte.ru which is a direct rip-off from facebook. And it's a popular trent in Russia - ripping off something foreign. There is even a phrase in Russian that goes "Our answer to Chamberlain" (in relation to a one-time British PM). I really hate that Russia tries to emulate everything form other countries which is the way to lose your cultural identity.

But I digress. Had an account with both vkontake and facebook. Haven't been keeping them updated nearly 2 years now. You're right folks it IS the highest degree of narcissism. But may be useful to get in touch with relatives. However I prefer email and Skype for those purposes.

P.S. But if you look at us, LTGers, these boards are our own facebook of sorts and it does get addictive. WE even have threads about cats for God's sakes  Guilty as charged:) At least I didn't try to put an outfit on mine.
