Got a 'First Wave' Fender Fretless MIJ bass from the early '90s. Thinking about Thomastik 344s

Hi guys! For starters, I have a Made in Mexico Jazz bass that I love, albeit not as much as my early '66 Starfire I bass.

As well, I recently picked up a 'Made in Japan' Fender Fretless that needs strings. I have Thomastiks on the Starfire and the MIM Jazz, so of course I'm thinking about a new set of Thomastiks for the MIJ.

Oh yeah, I'd also like to figure out how to use a compression pedal with a bass. I'd appreciate any advice from my LTG brothers and sisters.

Thanks, gilded.

If it is anything like my 87’ contemporary strat it should have the smoothest finished neck ever. I regret selling that one...

The thomastics will work well. , but if you‘d like to try a different taste, i like the fender 9050l a lot.
Compresser can do a lot, straigten the signal, really pump…start with short attack and release with a ratio 3:1 and fiddle to your liking.

I always liked DR Legend flats on the Fenders I've owned. Nice old-school tone, but they're just about the smoothest feeling flatwound out there. They're polished so well that it's hard to see the winding! Medium tension though, so they won't be as flexible as the TI's

Re: compressors - I personally prefer a compressor that has an indicator light to show when it is compressing. I set mine so that it starts compressing when I dig in.

Re: strings - I say go with what you know for now!
