Maybe greatest at what he did :)

I second that....at least qualify that by saying rock guitarist.

Or "electric" guitarist. Acoustic guitar is a different animal altogether.

New Rolling Stone Top 100 guitarists list

Rolling Stone published David Fricke's list of the Top 100 guitarists in 2003, and they revisit the subject with a panel of guitarists. Both lists came to the same conclusion -- Jimi Hendrix is the best guitarist.

About the best thing I got out of the list was a great photo of No. 24, Buddy Guy, playing a Guild Starfire IV.

Merged because they seemed like the same topic.

I think the idea that there can be a greatest guitar player is absurd and such a proclamation does nothing but sell papers (or magazines) and start debates. So, put enough qualifiers so that you don't have to pick between Hendrix, Segovia, Atkins (for example) and Hendrix will definitely rises to the top. I'd consider adding "rock" or "electric" as the first qualifier.

There is some footage of him playing a pretty incredible acoustic 12 string version of "Hear My train a 'comin'" on "Hendrix: A Documentary" (Sadly, not the Guild), but as much as I love the legacy, I understand the reservations about calling him "the greatest". I think "most influential" might be more appropriate, if one considers how many kids and other guitarists he might have inspired, and how some of his most trademark timbres are basically staples of rock guitar even today, to the point of being cliches in "rock muzak".
I suspect he would have hit it off quite well with Wes Montgomery though, with "Wind Cries Mary"....
Just noticed, all "the voters" are basically all rock/pop guitarists themselves, at least all the names I recognize, do ya think that might have something to do with it...

+1

... I'd consider adding "rock" or "electric" as the first qualifier.

Since this comes strictly down to opinion and not some objective metric, I also
consider adding: left handed and strat-wielding to the list of adjectives.

It's a goofy list. Given the panel of players that voted on this I'm surprised Mark Knopfler came in at 44.

In his time I agree, however there are too many since his death that have surpassed him. And a few before him as well, with all due respect. IMHWO of course.

It's a goofy list, alright. Very subjective. I love Chuck Berry, but does he belong in the top ten? Wow.
