My 72 JS 1 has the natural wood headstock. Not black and no chesterfield.
Also I posted in the CL/eBay section of the forum-someone is selling a pair of the single coil B-301/302 pups on eBay.
It's actually 2 separate auctions for one pup each auction . I'm on my phone now and can't post the links here, but they are in the thread in the eBay part of the forum. (Too bad he doesn't have the "hagmeat pickguard!")

Edit: the pups r history. Anyone get them?

Damn, missed out again. Price wasn`t bad either.

Mav, I`d like to see some pics of your JS1, if you can post some that would be cool.

Hagmeat,

Sorry u missed out on the pups. I had considered snagging them for you, but judging from your pictures, figured there was at least a 50 percent chance you did not want them, since you have those pickups on 3 basses already. Do you want to put them on the short scale JS2? You need to keep at least one with humbuckers! (or just get another!)

Anyway it is Murphy's law that I should have got them for you, but if you did not want them, I would have no short term use for them, and no way to even test them out. And with my luck the next day would be offered an unreal bargain on a mint B-301...I just couldn't deal with being stuck with them right now, so had to hold off. But, if there is anything you are in need of over there on the other side of the planet, contact me directly and let me know what is on your radar. I will help you if I can! Sorry to miss out on this set but "you can't land em all." There are others out there, and other B-301/302s out there. and a ton of other stuff. Definitely get in touch directly if you're looking for something from the United States.

I really like the humbucker on my JS 1 in the neck, and one thing I have come to realize on Guild basses, and I know Hagmeat and others do not agree with this-I really like the rosewood saddles on the bridge. The ones on my JS1 bass have been modified (or are replacements) with the valley of the saddle much deeper than stock. Not sure if this helps the sustain issue others have mentioned with the rosewood saddles, but I think rosewood saddles in general really gives the bass a unique "mellow" sound, especially with flats, that really is more "stripped down" or something-like a folky, maybe upright bass type of sound. I am not such a great bass player (still pretty novice) but have found using roundwounds and/or a non-rosewood saddle bridge gives a much "bigger" sound in the tone, but also, for me personally, creates more unwanted "background noises" between the round strings, frets, and tiny springs/components bridge setup...I don't have any of those issues w the JS 1, I just play it. it stays in tune. love it. Not ruling out the newer bridge like on Hagmeat's basses, as Ive never played one, I just like the rosewood saddles from what I know. The Newark Street bass has the rosewood saddles and roundwound strings. that was working out pretty nicely for me too, when I demoed it.

I must say Hagmeats photos/this thread, along with some previous fuel and other assorted factors, are certainly inspiring me. But for now I just have the one Guild bass. Here's some pics of my 1972 JS 1. The label on the inside is as cool as the headstock. "Jet Star Bass 1 Walnut." I do not believe it says "JS" anywhere on the instrument. (or "LS" or "NB"...)

Hagmeat if you are ever in the States and need a bass to play/borrow, u are looking at it right here. I can even pick u up at the airport! cheers.

it has also come to my attention that the "mis-labeled Long Scale" JS basses are not necassarily mis-labeled...

Some people have done their own independent research, and concluded on their own, that what they have in their hands is a "long scale," when in fact it is the short scale JS bass...

I hope to further clarify this. With some luck I will see the label of the aforementioned 74 JS Carved with my own 2 eyes, within a week or 2.

Also a Carved JS LS would look kinda wrong with the bridge covering a lot of the carving on the bottom of the body. and it wouldnt be a flush contact between the bridge and body where the bridge is mounted (it would be... "carved")

Thanks for the pics Mav. That looks awesome, I really like the grain on the headstock. Guilds look great in walnut. No worries about those pickups, I would have got them as spares anyway.
Thanks also for your generous offers mate, I have a cousin in Florida and one in Chicago who I hope to visit one day and if I ever come to New York we`ll catch
up for sure. I like to play with the tone rolled off halfway and I like the earthy sound of the rosewood saddles, but I liked how it sounded with the brass saddles
better. I agree, the rosewood saddles make it sound more like a double/upright bass. I kept the rosewood saddles and one day I might swap them back for a change.
Good luck with that carved JS2, it looks great in walnut and would be a great match for your JS1.
If you do decide to get it at least you won`t have to pay for shipping.
Cheers mate. Rob

Thanks Hagmeat. If I get that carved JS bass, it would only be because I was able to trade for it...and I probably would not keep it long term. I just want to trim down my arsenal, and thinking maybe in the end I could break even on the Carved JS, and help someone out that wants one. maybe someone around here, or close to here, already has the carved guitar, and wants the bass to match? But either way, if the trade is there, ill do it. But- there is a good chance it will not come together at all. I really just want to see it (and hear it).

In the meantime I have spoken to the guy (my neighbor) and shed some light on the long scale mystery, and a handful of other fun facts about his Guild instrument. I expect (and hope!) he will update his ebay listing to be as accurate as possible, for his own benefit, as well as any potential buyer. Seems like a nice guy on the phone, but said he's in Florida, so I don't know how soon he can edit his listing. I told him "If someone thinks they are actually getting a Carved LS which would be EXTREMELY rare and basically does not exist...at that price...and then they get it in the mail, to see it is a short scale...you may have a problem." So I warned him enough, and he understood, so expect he will at least change that and "maple" to "oak" asap.

I do like the Walnut on the JS though. have seen one or 2 others with the natural/grain headstock. I think they were all JS 1's but not sure. mine and one other for sure are JS1's w/natural headstock (both 1972).

also thanks for the heads up on the 1977 Walnut JS2 on ebay w/ Muller bridge...birth year and all. That one, unfortunately, is also not in my short term future, but I will keep an eye on it. didn't examine it too close but asking price seems reasonable. I have seen several 70's JS2's sell for less than $800 on ebay, original hard shell case and all...various colors, some were even fretless-all looked nice! I have also recently seen at least one nice one on Craigslist, who's asking price was $700. We even saw one go on ebay-with a bisonic! and it was green! albeit, had seen better days...but still had tons of life/mojo, and that sold for $7xx something...

at the same time I have seen one or 2 JS2's right around the $1,000 mark...they must have been nice...but people can also play games on ebay, so who knows. (just because it says "sold for $1,000...does not meant it actually did. it might not have sold at all...lots of tricks out there!!!)

The JS1's, from what I know, sell for almost as much as a JS2 (600-800, in nice shape). I think there are less of them, and they may have been discontinued prior to the discontinued JS2. It says in Hans' book but I don't recall at this moment.

so I think they are the best deal going on vintage short scale (if you like the humbuker or have plans for new pups)...they are 40 years old +/- that mahogany is nice and ripe now! i just love the neck on mine, more and more each time I play. and the body, the way it sits...i have actually started to wear thru the finish a bit from playing it. some nice self inflicted natural patina! I can see the wear in all my guitars (from myself). I dont know how someone can keep a new finish so mint if they play it, even occasionally. but that's just me.
