So...how do the Custom 7's sound?
The are interesting and high quality guitars. The addition of the planks on the top and bottom should deaden the tone quite a bit acoustically. Do they sound anything like a X170? M
There are at least 4 different bridges here.
Larry believes his was modified by the previous owner. If that is true then basically 5 different bridges.
There are at least 2 different styles of humbucking pickups.
There were at least 3 different nuts used:
My 3 piece: bone, ebony, and bone
The original nut on my guitar (far left in the pic) was not cut correctly and did not line up the strings properly.
So the guitar tech thought a composite 3 piece would look better on this guitar.
3 of the others: bone, nylon or plastic
one had a brass nut
Most here had a 5 piece neck
But at least 1 had a 3 piece.
The guitar is more solid with the top and back blocks
There is less acoustic feedback with the blocks.
There is less SPL output with the blocks.
It is very possible that the thinner Starfire would give the same acoustic output?
This is a narrow long Artist Award neck
It doesn't play like my old Epiphone Casino or my friend's solid block Gibson 335.
<<< How does it sound?>>>
It's something in between.
I have recorded a bit using the neck pickup jazz finger style and Wes Montgomery style and it works, feels, and sounds good.
I never used it as a main ax. Vibrato and bending are a bit more challenging with the narrow neck.
I (Jay) use round wound (unwound g string), Larry uses flat wounds.
Truth-to-tell, the bridge rattles a bit and if I were playing it a lot I'd also modify it.

I don't know, I've never played an X170
