Hello guys this is my first visit to the site. I have a Guild Jumbo bought in Rockville MD in 1996. I've tried to look for details of it online but without much luck. Perhaps some of you know the history....

Details

Model J26 . This is handwritten and has a suffix of what looks like SD (J26-SD). But it could be J26-JD)
The serial number is AJ260001.

It's a sunburst finish and has an arched back.

Is this an interesting guitar for Guild nerds?

Welcome to LTG!

The J-26 is basically the Jumbo brother to the D-26, which is a derivative of the almighty D-25. There were few built, and it looks like you have the first one.

It gets interesting if you post a picture. :barbershop_quartet_

Man, another one I didn't know even existed. I'd never heard of a J 26. I'll bet it's really sweet. Man, this site is so cool!!!!

Alas it's not in very good condition. Quite a few dinks and there is cracking to the glaze. Sounds nice though! Photos to follow soon

Interesting first post so WELCOME TO LTG! :eagerness:
And yes, pics are more than welcome here.

Cheers,
Joe

Wondering if the SD could possibly be SB to indicate Sunburst finish. In '96 I'm not sure how they noted a sunburst on the label. Just thinking out loud. Many times the penmanship on the labels was less than stellar. I'd love to see some photos of your guitar!! :encouragement:

Welcome to LTG CFN1963! As a former owner of a D26 I can say it was a great guitar. I can only imagine that the J26 would be the same. Would love to see some pics of it. (On the forum you have to host your photos somewhere else like Imageshack or Photobucket and then post a link to the photos address in your post to get them to show up.) Are you just researching it for yourself or trying to find out info on selling it?

The D-26 was a special run for Guitar Ctr, based on the D-25. I wonder if the J-26 was also a GC special? Is the back on your J-26 arched mahogany (perhaps based on the JF-4), or arched maple (perhaps based on the JF-30)?

Thanks for tip re photo bucket would never have worked that out.

I have toyed with the idea of selling it to buy one with a pickup/cutaway but have made the assumption that it wouldn't be worth much in its condition.

No Problem! That is a Good looking Jumbo, I'll bet it sounds pretty good as well. Why not just put a pickup in it and play the heck out of it?

I suppose I could do but I want another - smaller - guitar anyway. No idea of the value, especially given its poor condition.

Same thing they did with the D26, with the light colored binding, I think. That was the major difference between the 26 and 25. I'm with Tx on this one. Throw a pickup in that thing and PLAY AWAY!! There's no help for the cutaway preference. But why not have TWO guitars?? It's happened before..... :encouragement:

The light binding was one difference on the D26 but the most visible difference was the Clear finish on the back and sides allowing the natural color of the Mahogany to show through. It looks like they used the tinted finish on the J26 Jumbo version instead of the clear. Here is a pic of the D26 Back and sides for comparison.

I'm not much of a "Burst" guy - preferring instead the au naturale look, but that is one NICE looking guitar! Is it the lighting in those pictures or is that really more of a tobacco Burst as opposed to the more traditional red/yellow Sunbusrt ?

X 2. I don't usually like sunburst finishes but like that one quite a bit.
