I just recently purchased a Guild X-79 Skyhawk to restore and add to my collection. Can anyone tell me if anything in the serial number indicates the original color of the instrument? I'm thinking the one that I purchased may have been painted before. If I can identify the original paint color, I'd prefer to paint it that color. If not, I guess I'll just pick a color from the standard model colors.
Any help would be most appreciated.

Afraid that there is nothing in the serial number to indicate colour. I'm taking it that there is no trace of the original paintwork in the control or pickup cavities?
A lot of very good information in GAD's reviews, including the original colour options:cool:

I saw a blue burst for sale recently.
In 1982 they had 5 colors:
Black
Black Sparkle
Metallic Blue
Candy Apple Red
White
Skynyrd used Guilds!!

So what color was it originally?

Yes, it has the original paint. The paint has faded to a green color, but it's original.
Thanks again Hans for your help!

That’s only good if you like blue and green with equal enthusiasm.

Serial number makes it an early one from 1981 ( serial numbers go up to AD100304 for that year), the traditional style headstock was only used on the first batches.
Thank you. It's black, not sparkle, and is in pristine condition. I own many guitars, and this one is in very very good condition. Would you know how I can get this appraised?

We often refer people to the sold listings on Reverb. If you can find any comparables then you at least have the last listed price before the instrument sold. You can post pictures here and ask for opinions but if you intend to sell please don't list it here until you have 10+ posts. If you need something more credible then Gruhn will do appraisals for a fee. Insurance companies will often accept the MSRP adjusted for inflation as a staring point. They don't care about an actual value as much as they care about limiting their liability so you may have some flexibility about where the number comes from.

Not familiar with this site as I became a member only hours ago. Not trying to sell anything. Not trying to bend any rules either.
Not trying to be on the defensive. Only looking for some help from fellow Guild owners and fans of the instrument.
Have done a lot of research and suffice it to say, there is not a lot to find until GAD pointed me to this place. Thank you for that!
