Next time you are at your local GC, assuming you might have one in your area, look for a $5 bin that will have all sorts of strings they are trying to get rid of. I picked up a set of D'A PB XT .13-.56 for the F30R, typically, $19 bucks, instead $5.43 out the door. They had a few other brands too that would have worked in a pinch. Unless this was just a local store decision at my GC, it's worth a look, in case this is a national directive.

I was combing thru the box I guess like a bit of a mad man, as this store manager guy comes up to me as asks how I am doing. I wonder sometimes where all the crazy for guitar strings people are these days, or is it just me....I said to him, hey man, this is awesome, thanks for doing this string bin. He just sort of walked away slowly...

They have this at my local store too! Unfortunately, Guitar Center doesn't stock my Thomastik flatwound guitar strings, nor have I ever seen any flatwound or tapewound short-scale or medium scale bass strings in there.
That said, I realize I'm kind of a weirdo when it comes to strings, so I can acknowledge that this clearance string bin would be great for anyone looking to try some new-to-them varieties.

They're in the bin because they're old. Old strings exposed to humidity changes have a shelf life, unless they're in those 'corrosion protect' packages.

the XTs I grabbed were in corrosion packages for sure, most if not all D'A strings regardless of coating or not come this way. But true words you speak, as I got a $5 set of EB Aluminums before and they were terrible old.

:) Yeah, Thomastik's are basically an open-wallet-and-empty-it situation. Worth it though if you like 'em!

No, they bin out the stuff that doesn't move, probably won't carry 'em any more. SJ store does similar stuff and not just with strings. Common retail strategy, liquidate and at least recover some cash to invest in something else. Actually can't remember the last time I saw "open sleeve" strings, but have only sampled the "big boys" in the last few years, D'A, Martin, GHS...and never bought electric strings which might be a little more "competitive" market with a place for short shelf life w/ ultra-low cost packaging?

It's pretty much one of the worst ideas GC has ever had, not knowing I exist and will just start loitering at the $5 string bin.

"Hey, bro, can you get me a cup of coffee while I sift thru here. This could take a while. I got my sleeping bag just in case, but I will lock up, no worries..."

I used to belong to their String Club. I don't recall the details but it was something to do with a pack of strings each month. I found my String Club card not long ago while cleaning out a drawer and wondered if they still had that.
