Guitars and their serial numbers

Hey, guys! Could you please explain why telling another person the serial number of your guitar is like divulging how much you earn a month?

It's a theft thing, Russian... Not just instrument theft, but also there are unscrupulous sellers out there who will steal this information and use it to try to sell illegitimate items.

Most of us around here discuss Guild serial numbers, but probably not in this section of the board.

As an owner, it's a good idea to have these serial numbers for your instruments cataloged and available in case of actual theft. We're always on the lookout here for people who have had a theft.
