When you have a chance read page 18 in Hans' book.

Good stuff. Been a long time since I read that, Ralf. Thanks for the pointer.

While I was in the bible, I confirmed that AD439 went past Hans' list for the F-50 (AD) in 1969, and of course 1970 was a year without complete records for those old-style serial numbers.

Hey Sandy,

The label on your Starfire says 'Guild Guitars, Inc.' and does not mention the city and/or country!

Sincerely,

Hey, Hans... Any verdict on where / when AD439 (@Upperlake 's F-50) was built? We're assuming 1970, based on the information from the bible, but not certain about that or whether it was built in Westerly or Hoboken. Just curious.

Welcome to LTG Upperlake. You've come to the right place if you are looking for answers on everything Guild and lots more that isn't. Your guitar is one of the many conundrums with serial numbers that have been brought here. Serial number record keeping is an interesting part of Guild's history. Ones with one letter prefix, two letter prefix, no letter prefix and moving back and forth between the formats. What's great about it all is organizational issues may have existed but the overall quality of the instruments did not suffer through all of the moves and all of the repurchasing of the company for 70+ years.

Just to clarify, is it known for fact that the labels were written out ahead of time?..and then they had a stack of labels with the older letter/number configuration that they didn’t want to get rid of for some reason so they used them anyway? Is this an assumption? Is this in Han’s book?

No and no. Why would you think so? Only later during 1970 (not on 12/31/69) the serial number system was changed. Westerly used the Two letter system as normal system. Also I don't understand @chazmo questioning the 1970 date, it is clearly written in Hans book I'd say that she was made in 1970, you need to read the page where the serial numbers are explained. And Hans did not object that she was made in Westerly, also this is clearly written on page 18 of the book in my opinion.

Definitely Westerly!
