My wife and I have the largest Bodum french press one can buy, which is 1.5 liters -- supposedly 12 cups rest of the world, or more like 8 big gulps American size. We got it as a wedding gift, and it makes the greatest brew. We split a full batch in the morning, and I usually need one more cup after lunch. Love my coffee!

You should check out these Swedish Bahco pipe wrenches. They've saved my butt a bunch of times and the opening is huge.
They also grip incredibly well like Knipex pliers. BTW Would it have worked to simply put a couple of long bolts into a couple of the holes and then use the extension in the same way to loosen it? Either way, I admire your ingenious and spiffy printed solution!
