How to tell if it's a AAA?

I have a 2000 bluesbird which I picked up on Craigslist several months ago, and was wondering how to tell if it's a AAA. It's a natural with mahogany colored sides. As you can see it does have a fair amount of flame, but I didn't think naturals were AAA's. Regardless, it's a great guitar!

Grading is a subjective thing that the wood supplier does. Each supplier grades differently, but LMI's description of their grading policies may be used as a good benchmark.
Figured Maple is our biggest seller and we get some of the best material available. It is available here in both flame figure and in quilt figure in various grades in either Les Paul™ or drop-top thickness.
Our grading scale follows a good (A grade), better (AA grade), best (AAA grade) premium (AAAA) scale. Do not confuse our grading with other industry grading, since our AAA grade is comparable to 4A and our AAAA compares to the 5A grades of other vendors. (By the same token our grading categories are broader.)
Our good grade has subtle figure that may not appear very distinct in the white, but good staining or shading techniques can bring out a beautiful, soft moving affect. In the better grade the wood will be distinctly figured in the white and with good contrast and figure throughout most of the pattern area. This is what you are used to seeing on vintage Les Paul™ models. The best grade has the highest degree of contrast and intensity of figure and is the hardest to find and acquire. The higher grade quilted tops are the rarest, and thus more expensive than even the finest flamed top. The highest grade tops of both the flamed and quilted tops really are something special, and will give an instrument a dramatic, eye-popping appearance.

The fact that your top appears to be consistent all the way across with no non-figured areas, and is very apparent in natural is consistent with AAA. Nice.

All guitars on ebay and craigslist are "vintage", "rare", "collectable", "sure to increase in value" and at least AAA!
If you're a member and it breaks down you get a free lift to the luthier's?
Will they drop off a replacement for a broken string? :p

Thanks for the responses - let me clarify. Guild put out 3 versions of the Bluesbird: the Blues90, the Bluesbird, and the AAA Bluesbird, which is a Bluesbird with a higher quality maple top. I'm trying to determine if mine would be considered a 'regular' or 'AAA' model.

Hey dougdnh,

You can see my AAA rated BB here: viewtopic.php?f=4&t=17297
Yours might not be as "flamed" looking but is no less good looking, and as mentioned before, wood ratings, even if somehow categorized according to set parameters, are ultimately a subjective matter...
Enjoy it, AAA or not!

Being an expert on this and many other subjects I will grade your Bluesbird to be AAA.

On Bluesy’s guitar playing, I will rate him an A+++

And I will recommend adorshki to AA.

Glad I could help.

Doug, you might want to send a message to Hans Moust, telling him your serial number of the guitar and he might be able to help you. Anything else is just guessing.
