Why would a knowledgeable guy like Hans be booted from that other forum?

RE: the original topic, this Frugal Yankee also uses a damp kitchen sponge (with a little trimmed off one long side) in a snack-size baggie, tucked into a guitar case. Or in the soundhole, pinched between two strings, for a guitar that seems overly dry.

They have a rule that you can't post advertisements\sell stuff etc. Hans had his url of his website in his profile. In his website which had nice pictures and information about guitars, he also offered some parts for sale. So they booted him without warning. It made no sense to me. There were a few of us who boycotted the FDP forum after that.

The past few years I've been using a Hunter room humidifier. I got the present one last year for about $50. It uses a filter, but one filter lasts the whole season. Holds 3 or 5 gallons of water and in colder weather needs refilled about once a day. I think it's of the evaporative type. In the coldest of weather , it's able to keep the humidity in the room at 40-41%. I do keep a couple instruments on stands in the living room. The rest stay in cases in the closet. I got the humidifier because I had noticed some adverse effects of low humidity on one of my guitars. When I figured out that was the cause I went straight out and bought the humidifier. I'm now very careful about the humidity and I expect never to be without a humidifier in the room where my instruments are sitting out. That's my penny's worth.

Good call. I got a little room humidifier but it's only really good for a small part of the room.

Since I only have the one acoustic and I keep it in the case I went with the Oasis humidifier. The strings hold it in place even when it's standing upright in the closet.

Looks like I need to ammend my previous post. It doesn't keep it at 41%. Keeps it about 35%. :D

My 1984 D15M developed two soundboard cracks from lack of humidity. That's why I ened up cutting the top off and re-necking/re-topping the guitar. Fortunately, I like it alot better this way but, imagine if this had happened to a guitar I was really enamored with.

I have one os those green snake (Dampit?) humidifiers in the guitar now and keep it nice and moist. Not only do I have re-built guitar to protect, but I have two months work into now as well. Would be a shame to see that go to waste.
