So I am sure that I'm not doing this completely properly. But I'm not quite sure how to find an Answer . I sent my serial number and a picture of my Guild D55. But I haven't gotten any response from Hans. so I was wondering if anyone here knew how to breakdown this Corona serial number. CV 000241. Any help at all is greatly appreciated

Let me apologize to Hans He has responded to me and has been a huge help thank you Hans

Welcome to LTG. I'm going to guess that since Hans lives in the Netherlands, he may be sleeping at the moment, depending on the time when you tried to contact him. Nice D55, by the way. I have a 2000 and it's my favorite Guild.

Thank you for the nice response. that's a good point. He might be. I forgot about the time differential. my bad.

yes, I've been playing guitar since 1954 and I have owned countless numbers of electric and acoustic guitars over that time period. The Martin D45 was a model that I always admired and wanted to own one day, but then I played a Guild D55 and it was immediately an unbelievable instrument. It satisfies all of my musical desires and needs.

Hello Silver Creek,

Welcome! Your Guild D-55 was completed during the year 2002. I've never seen a truss rod cover like that on a Corona made instrument, so I would think a previous owner installed it.

Sincerely,

Since yours is a 2000 can I assume it's a Corona built? Does it have a serial number that starts with the letters CV ?

I have read numerous articles about the Corona built D55 and some of those articles say that some of these D55 have had problems but so far. I don't have a single issue.
So far in my experience, my D55 is incredibly built with amazing craftsmanship that is beyond any acoustic I've ever owned and the tone is immaculate.

Thank you Hans. I really appreciate your response. And yes, I bought it used. And it had that truss rod cover. I never asked about it when I bought it.

You know I have read. Many articles about Corona built guitars were of poor quality. have you ever had any evidence of this? I can only speak from my own experience. And since I've been playing guitars since 1954 I have never come across an acoustic guitar. That has such amazing build quality. It sounds and plays like nothing else.

In year 2000 they were built in Westerly. Production in Corona only started in 2002.

Thank you Ralf. That piece of information is very helpful. I'm just trying to learn as much as I can about this amazing guitar

In my experience, historical generalizations about guitar eras will typically have grains of truth to them, but a broad brush stroke can too easily hide & dismiss many fine instruments. Freely sing the praises of your beautiful guitar & enjoy!

Guild was purchased by Fender in 1995. They moved to Corona, CA in 2001. That was rather short lived however and in 2004 they moved to Tacoma, WA. Tacoma was also short lived and then they moved to New Hartford, CT. When Fender moved Guild to Tacoma, many of the unsold guitars they had were liquidated through Musical Instrument Reclamation Corp. who does sales of guitars that either need some work, OR are being sold at a reduced price without warranty. They also did this in Tacoma after a couple of years there, mostly with the Contemporary Series. This is done to eliminate excess stock and having to move a lot of guitars around to a new factory. It also brings in money during a relocation.

The only reason I'm giving this rather condensed and brief outline, is that any time you sell off stock at a lowered price with no warranty, people are going to talk about quality problems. I don't know of any actual quality problems at Corona, or at least no more than at any other factory, but people tend to think less of the brand for a bit when they do this. Just human nature, I guess? Now the Contemporary Series from Tacoma had some serious problems. Some were great and some were not. It just depends.

Welcome to LTG. That Corona D55 is a beauty. They made a really lot of great guitars there. (y)(y)

Ha! The Gibson J45 was the model I wanted one day. Then a Guild F50R showed up on reverb, I made an offer that was accepted (a great deal!), and... wow! Forget the J45!

Welcome to LTG!

I've heard some of these "rumors" too. My experience is just the opposite. My first Guild was my JF30-12, which was built in Corona in 2002, and it is spectacular!

Welcome, Silver Creek. I have only two data points on the Corona era--a 2003 50th Anniversary D55 (limited run of 50 guitars) and a D50. It's hard, and maybe foolish, to generalize about an era based on two guitars, but I'll say that my two are excellent. I'm glad you found your D55.
